Keep it here for all of the news about the Packers’ cuts to get down to 53. The Green Bay Packers  have to reduce their active roster by 37 players this weekend, cutting down from 90 to 53 by 4:00 PM Eastern on Saturday to meet the NFL’s deadline. General manager Brian Gutekunst is at the helm of this process for the first time, having served under Ted Thompson for years, and his approach to roster construction will be an intriguing storyline for Packers fans to watch.
Throughout Friday and Saturday, keep your browsers locked here as we bring you news from throughout the weekend.
First, here are a few quick notes about the Packers’ roster construction:

The Packers can place suspended running back Aaron Jones  on the reserve/suspended list at the deadline, which removes him from the 53-man roster. That means that the team only needs to release, trade, or otherwise free up 36 spots.
Players can be placed on injured reserve in order to help get down to 53 as well. In past years, players put on IR at or before the deadline were not eligible to return during the same season.
The Packers have no players on the active/Physically Unable to Perform list. This means that they cannot put any players on reserve/PUP at the deadline to free up roster spots.

Here we go.

They call it a "deadline," but what are the real-world repercussions if a team doesn't complete all of the necessary transactions by 4 p.m. Saturday?

They have seemed to enjoy taking mid-round draft picks from teams breaking rules lately... that or in one or two cases, instead of outright taking them, they just move a draft pick down 10 to 16 spots for some reason.

Cut them now and save tomorrows practice reps for the ones who matter.

More detail on IR rules:

The NFL and the NFL Players Association agreed to a short-term IR rule change which took effect in 2012. The change allowed one player (per team) to be activated from the IR list, and has since been changed so each team can return up to two players during the season. Additionally, teams originally had to declare a player as return eligible when placed on IR. They no longer have to declare a person eligible to return when they first go on IR. Before the enactment of this rule, any player that was placed on the IR list was not eligible to play again for the same team in that season (regular season and postseason).

The deadline is for when teams have to report the info to the NFL. Normally the Packers (and a couple of other teams) don't report the info to the media until (hours) after the deadline.

It was very important one year, because the writers got P.O. ... I'm guessing they told their family they'd be come for dinner, and then the release announcement didn't start until after 9:30 ... and so the writers were pissed they waited around all day (and maybe didn't bring anything to eat) only to get to go home at (I'm guessing 10:30?) so they were pissed... because they then had to meet with each other about who's writing what and then go home and write it and didn't get get to go to sleep until morning of the next day. They were pretty sore about that.

Of course... I was freaking waiting to earn the last couple of releases that weren't yet announced vs twitter too... and I DON"T GET PAID! So boo hoo to them.

I'm a little surprised that Hawkins got the ax, since he was active for 15 games last year. But considering he only accrued all of 41 tackles in two seasons, the Packers must have found him dispensable.

Mucky Tundra (1h) : Rude!
beast (2h) : Martha? 😋
Zero2Cool (6h) : Raiders hired someone from the elderly home.
dfosterf (8h) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (10h) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you
wpr (22-Jan) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (22-Jan) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
