Well I think it is safe to say, none of these band members belonged to a frat.. walk in the park comparatively.

Seriously though... sounds like they handled it well to this point.. hopefully they curb the problem so it doesn't step onto anyone's beliefs.

UW band parents' letters say hazing violated their sons' morals
Report says students were forced to drink alcohol, play inappropriate games

By Erica Perez of the Journal Sentinel

Posted: Nov. 24, 2008

The investigation into hazing allegations by members of the University of Wisconsin-Madison marching band stemmed from complaints from parents of two male freshman band members, according to documents released Monday.

A few previously unreported examples of inappropriate behavior by band members included singing a cadence that includes the word vagina, placing a condom on a banana and a game involving alcohol in which some band members formed a "hamster cage" for other students using torn up pages of phone books.

The Journal Sentinel obtained the records through a request under the state's open records law.

The entire 315-member band was suspended Oct. 3 and kept from playing in the Ohio State game so the university could investigate accusations of hazing. In the Oct. 3 news conference, band director Mike Leckrone said the hazing accusations involved alcohol and inappropriate sexual behavior.

After the investigation, the university found the band had a culture that allowed demeaning and inappropriate behavior. The band was reinstated and allowed to play again Oct. 10 and some students faced disciplinary action.

An Oct. 3 letter to band parents said allegations included students "being sexually fondled against their will," but Dean of Students Lori Berquam later said she regretted some of the language of the parent letter because reports of sexual fondling were unsubstantiated.

The main complaint behind the allegation of inappropriate sexual behavior was a game that was not widespread in which a blindfolded freshman male was told he was to remove someone's bra and the person turned out to be another male with a stuffed bra on.

The investigation report from Associate Dean of Students Kevin Helmkamp confirmed other behaviors had taken place, including a boredom-busting activity for bus rides in which some upperclassmen stuck an apple between their buttocks and dropped it into a hat.

Berquam said Monday she felt Leckrone made the best decision with the information he had when he decided to suspend the band. She also said it was unfortunate that band members who took no part in the hazing incidents felt they were deemed guilty by association.

"They really also in some ways suffered here, and have a tarnished reputation, fair or not, because of the actions of those who demonstrated these behaviors . . . But I don't think professor Leckrone had another option," Berquam said.
Freshmen forced to drink alcohol

The first parent complaint, an Oct. 2 e-mail, said that the sender's son was initiated into the band "in a way that was both humiliating and required him to violate . . . personal morals, standards and convictions against consuming alcohol."

The parent said he was complaining despite his son's reluctance and expressed concern about how the matter would be handled so as to avoid retribution.

"What can be done to correct this situation in a way that does not cause grief . . . for the students who are opposed to this 'frat' type environment?" the e-mail says.

The second complaint, a three-page Oct. 2 letter to Chancellor Carolyn "Biddy" Martin, says the parent's son was forced to drink concoctions of mustard, ketchup and chicken broth mixed with liquor, sit in the bus bathroom for an hour or two at a time while adult band staff members were on the bus and have his head shaved in a way that "looked hideous on national television."

The father who wrote the letter also said in an e-mail that his son, also a freshman, wanted to withdraw from the band after being hazed.

The complaints do not name specific individuals behind the harassment.

As a result of the complaints and interviews with the two accusers and their parents, the university interviewed 62 band members and most section leaders, according to a letter from Helmkamp.

A standard script was used to interview students based on the specific allegations made in the complaints.

"During the interviews, all specific behaviors that we inquired about were confirmed as having occurred," Helmkamp wrote. "Virtually all interviewees indicated that they were not forced to do any activity."

Since the investigation concluded, the university has installed more oversight over the band, including a new staff member charged with promoting a positive culture and changes to travel policies.

The whole parent thing is kind of stupid. I mean, if you're in college you're probably 18 and are considered a legal adult, so you better start acting like one. If they found the behavior inappropriate they should have complained to someone besides their parents. And to be honest, a lot of those activities sound like a fun time!

Hazing cannot be tolerated, people die every so often as a result. There's a big difference between "Hazing" and "Partying."

I would agree with you.. As long as those kids aren't in school due to mommy and/or daddy paying the way.

If the parents have anything to do with the tuition.. You better believe they have a say.

The first time I read this thread I kept thinking it was a Wii band, and I could only shake my head at imagining people drumming with those dainty little white hand controllers.

Zero2Cool (1h) : NFL thought it would get more attention week preceding Super Bowl.
Zero2Cool (1h) : Yes, the Pro Bowl. It was played Sunday before Super Bowl from 2010-2022
packerfanoutwest (1h) : pro bowl
Zero2Cool (1h) : From 2010 to 2022, it was played on the Sunday before the Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (1h) : They moved it to the BYE week before Super Bowl several years ago.
packerfanoutwest (1h) : it was always after the SB.....
beast (11h) : Though I stop following pro bowl years ago
beast (11h) : I thought the pro game was before the Super Bowl?
packerfanoutwest (11h) : ok now for the Pro Bowl Game in Hawaii
TheKanataThrilla (12h) : If I was Philly I would try to end it instead of punting it
Mucky Tundra (12h) : VICTORY! We have (moral) victory!
TheKanataThrilla (12h) : Hey they mentioned that we 3-peted
Mucky Tundra (13h) : seems to me the 49ers should have traded Aiyuk when they had the chance
Mucky Tundra (13h) : if the Eagles get it down to the 1, do they Tush Push or give it to Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (13h) : 49ers have a money problem if they want to sign their QB
Mucky Tundra (13h) : Wait for real? Didn't he just get an extension two years ago?
Zero2Cool (13h) : 49ers gonna trade Deebo. Interesting
TheKanataThrilla (13h) : Replays always never seem to show the holdings
TheKanataThrilla (13h) : Great throw by Hurts
Mucky Tundra (13h) : Where Carter falls prey to bad off the field influences (to be clear, not saying he'd clip someone though)
Mucky Tundra (13h) : Had Carter not gone to Philly were they already had a lot of old college friends, he ends up in a similar spot to Aaron Hernandez
Mucky Tundra (13h) : I think some of his coaches told scouts to stay away
Mucky Tundra (13h) : the street racing incident+conditioning and motivation problems
beast (13h) : Then Carter was street racing, where the other car crashed and people died... and other teams were scared to pick Carter for some reason
beast (13h) : I think the Saints traded up, giving their next year 1st to the Eagles, and then they sucked and Eagles got the 10th overall pick
packerfanoutwest (13h) : wtf Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (13h) : Getting Carter and Nolan Smith in the first round in 2023 was pretty darn good
Mucky Tundra (14h) : for some reason i'm thinking of a draft where the Eagles where in the mid 20s and a top player fell all the way to them
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : I think so. I would need to look it up. Think it may have been Carolina's pick.
Mucky Tundra (14h) : i'm not sure who i'm thinking of now
Mucky Tundra (14h) : oh fuck me i messed that up
Zero2Cool (14h) : Jordan Davis was 13th overall
Zero2Cool (14h) : Carter was 9th overall
Zero2Cool (14h) : Eagles had 15th and 10th selections, moved to 13 and 9 to get Davis and Carter back to back
Zero2Cool (14h) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (14h) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (14h) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
packerfanoutwest (14h) : another crap halftime show
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : I think it is over, but then I think of Atlanta and want Philly to go in with the same intensity in the second half
Mucky Tundra (14h) : And with a Pass Rush that might as well be on a milk cartoon and no Jaire
Martha Careful (14h) : I cant help but feel good about how well the Packers D played in Philly during the playoffs
Mucky Tundra (14h) : this game is over
Mucky Tundra (14h) : This might be the kill shot here
Mucky Tundra (14h) : oh that's such a bad penalty for KC after getting the 3rd down stop
TheKanataThrilla (15h) : Philly DL has come to play
TheKanataThrilla (15h) : Ceoper DeJean with the INT scored...bad memories of draft night
Mucky Tundra (15h) : ok scratch that
Mucky Tundra (15h) : Game feels like last years Super Bowl: 49ers started off in control, moved the ball well but didn't have much of a lead to show for it
