If we hire someone in-house, Joe Whitt Jr is my choice. What do you folks think about this happening?

Incumbent cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt is considered the favorite to become the Packers‘ next defensive coordinator, reports Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. Green Bay will start its DC search by interviewing three internal candidates: Whitt, safeties coach Darren Perry, and assistant head coach/linebackers Winston Moss. While all three coaches are currently under contract with the Packers, there’s no guarantee that any or all of them will return in 2018, as Demovsky writes in a separate piece. If Green Bay hires an outside candidate to replace Dom Capers, that new coach could aim to bring in his own assistants.

To me, the defense pretty much sucked all the way around, so I'm not sure why the Packers would hire from within.

I could be just a sucker for being educated and listening to what I perceive to be a fiery get-after-em guy too.

I also think he did pretty well with Tramon Williams, Al Harris, Sam Shields, Casey Hayward, Micah Hyde and even got LaDarius Gunter to play decently at times against WR2's and 3's.

What we need is a guy whose defense isn’t too complicated for rookies. Then again, who knows what the new GM will be like?

Oh boy... Joe Whitt wouldn't you know it. I'll stop rhyming.

We have a bottom or middle tier defense for years where none of the position groups consistently perform at a high level and the choice is to promote from within?

I know I've thrown this out a bit flippantly in the past but are the Packers a cult or a football team? Seriously.

This has done nothing but either de-energize the fanbase or keep it the same boring vanilla it is year after year. I shudder to think there are people out there who are actually fired up by this.

EDIT: I don't think this report is accurate. I didn't see this on Demovsky's timeline and had it been there or out there at all MM would've been asked about it today and he wasn't asked about this report.

Dom Capers survived Colin Kaepernick running for 181 yards against his defense in 2012, the NFC title game meltdown in 2014, Larry Fitzgerald carving it up in overtime in the 2015 playoff loss and a No. 31 ranking in passing defense in 2016. But his nine-year run came to an end this week, when McCarthy fired him. Cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt and safeties coach Darren Perry likely are the top two internal candidates, but expect McCarthy to interview Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and other experienced coordinators.

Thanks for the clarification... Not the news I wanted to see...most wanted to see.

I'll tell you what, I think the new DC is currently on a playoff team's roster. I watched that presser and MM said he was in no rush and looked like he already knew who it was and the guy had already accepted. I'd be surprised if it doesn't turn out to be the case.

There is no way he could, in good conscience, hire any of these internal guys. I also think this is why certain guys are gone. The new DC is probably okay with the guys left over and wasn't with the ones who are now gone. Okay might be the wrong word...okay enough to give them an interview for a chance on his staff. I think is a better way to say it. All of them might be gone after he gets here.

You think there is a wink-nod deal going on?

Whitt is the only in house guy I'd want. I don't know how he'll coordinate but he seems like a good coach who engages the players. I doubt it would be too big for him since at like 30 years old he got brought up to coach freakin Al Harris and Charles Woodson and earned their resepect.

beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.

Mucky Tundra (6-Aug) : Travis Glover placed on IR; seasons over for him

dfosterf (5-Aug) : I'm going to call that a good move.
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Packers sign CB Corey Ballentine
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : I'm not sure how to kill the draft order just yet so it's not so confusing.
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : *to be able
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Keep in mind, we do a draft reorder once all members locked in
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : You can have my 12th Rd for your 2nd round
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Hey i didn't know we could trade picks in fantasy
