$12.75 is the cap hit, NOT the dollar amount... $3.25 of that cap hit is signing bonus which Cobb is getting/keeping, either way.

So Cobb's 2018 dollar amount is $9.5 million.

$12.75 million is the cap hit
$3.25 million is the dead cap / sunk cost from the signing bonus
$9.5 million is the difference and amount that Cobb can gain in 2018 (if he plays under that contract)

Fans have been talking about how good the Packers WR corps is for years now but once again I think it could be a major question mark. Especially if we don't resign Adams. I get the whole concussion issue worries but that won't stop some team from offering him a lot of money. More the Alshon Jeffery got? Maybe, maybe not but it will be somewhere in that range. Is he worth it, again, maybe maybe not but IMO he is currently the best WR the Packers have and if they do not resign him they will go into 2018 with some major questions not unlike the past 4 or 5 seasons.

Without DA you have an aging Jordy Nelson, a disappearing Randall Cobb and, just like in years past, a bunch of potential. Only the last few years that potential included Davante Adams,.

I love Jordy Nelson and I think he can still be a very effective pro bowl caliber WR, just not the outside guy he has been and partially because of AR. With him throwing the ball any of our WRs have pro bowl potential. Move Jordy to the slot and take advantage of his route running ability. I also like Randall Cobb a lot and I think he could be very productive as well but if JN moves to the slot what do you do with RC. Plus there is the cap thing with both of them.

The rest of the WRs on the roster do not instill the kind of hope I would like to see. The kind of potential I thought we had when DA was one of those guys.

Montgomery could be a wildcard at the position but after going through all the trouble to switch him to RB I don't know if they would switch him back.

Contrary to popular belief I do think we could resign Adams and keep Nelson and Cobb. Adams 2018 cap hit could be limited by giving him a low salary. It happens all the time with big 2nd contracts because of the signing bonus. Extend Jordy and convert some of his 2018 salary to a signing bonus which would lower his cap hit in 2018 and let RC play out his contract . He (RC) is still young enough to play his heart out in 2018 gunning for another big payday in 2019 so if he does and prices himself out of the Packers range so be it. I don't know if he would be as amenable as Jordy to the same sort of restructure simply because of his age. He may just want to play out his deal and let the chips fall where they may.

Though I really dislike the Jeffery comparisons... he got $13 million per year. I'm thinking Adams needs to be around $11.5 million per year (or less)... if there demand is around $12 million per year (or higher), then the Packers need to look into other options (and there are some other interesting young WR options that might be getting to FA).

Also I believe it was rumored the Dolphins (with the Philbin as head coach at the time) offered Cobb about $12 million per year (at least for the first 3 years or something) and he decided to stay with the Packers even though they only would offer $10 million per year.

I think they could keep all 3 too... I just think it might be hard on the salary cap... though I read something about the Packers could potentially be with the 6th most salary cap space? .... though I think that was implying if they cut their over prices vets.

Yes Adam's cap hit of all players is towards the end if you're just talking about a normal contract... if your talking about purposely doing more so even more than normal is on the end, sorta like you're talking about with Nelson, then I don't like those cap tricks. While they're great for opening cap space now... they're horrible for cap space later and lots of teams (including the Packers under Sherman) have gotten into tight cap problems doing things like that.

I don't like those deals either, a 5 year deal that is really a 3 year deal because it calls for a 20 million dollar salary in year 4 or 5 and we know the guy will be cut before then and all the signing bonus is escalated. With the way the cap is a shrewd GM shouldn't have a problem with a 4 year 48 million per (average) if they work it right. Fans see that and think no way can they afford a 12 million dollar cap hit next year and still keep Nelson and Cobb. If they make 18 million of it a signing bonus and give him a 1.5 million dollar salary in the first year that means his 2018 cap hit would only be 6 million. Then they give him a salary of 8 million in year 2 (cap hit 12.5 but Cobb could be gone) 9.5 in year 3 (cap of 14) 12 in year 4 (cap 16.5) Year 4 looks tough but if they decide to part way its only 4.5 million dead money and if he keeps getting better he will be a bargain by then.

when you are looking at a contract like Nelson has you have three options. Stand pat and take the big cap hit. Cut him and take the lesser dead money hit but if you do that you have to add the cost of his replacement into the dead money so if you cut him to save 9 million and sign someone for 6 million you are really only saving 3 so you have to ask is Jordy Nelson worth 3 million over someone else. I'm not saying yes or no just that you have to factor that in. Or option three, if you would like to keep him around, convert some of his guaranteed money (he is going to get it anyway and it is going to count against the cap eventually) to bonus and spread the cap hit out.

just spitballing numbers here and going from memory but say you convert 8 million of his 9 million 2018 salary to a signing bonus and give him 3 more years. That gives him a 1 million salary this year plus 2.75 (roughly)in new bonus hit and what, 3 million hit from the last bonus for a total hit of about 6-7. A savings of 6-7 million Now for new money you give him 3 million next year, 4 the next and 5 after that. Cap hits will be around 6, 7 and 8 million respectively but dead money will be 9, 6 and 3. if you think he can be productive for another three years after next year you have a cheap #2 WR and if not your dead money is not much more than it is now after 2 more years.

I just looked and Jeffrey only got a 6.25 million signing bonus so the cap hits for that for the next 4 years are only 1.25 million per year for that part and the dead money isn't that bad but his salary is almost 12, 13 13. His cap hit for 2018 even with his new deal is under 5 million but it jumps to almost 15 in 2019 because if the high salary and low signing bonus. They also added some option bonuses in there which seems to be sort of a compromise between a signing bonus and salary. I am not sure exactly how that counts if he ever gets cut.

The sort of deal I am talking about for Adams works best if they are trying to also keep Cobb and Nelson. If they plan on moving on from one or both of them then yeah, cut the bonus, give him more salary next year and make the dead money lower on the back end. Like I said my numbers are very rough but it should give you an idea on how it could be done. I am with you though in that i generally don't like back loaded contracts.
