Hawk looked just as impressive on tape as he did live during his first start as the Green Bay Packers middle linebacker.

Hawks coaches on Monday stopped short of saying the third-year pro, who spent his first 2 seasons playing the weak-side spot, might end up being better in the middle. But Hawks play he led the Packers with seven tackles (including six solos) while communicating the defensive plays for the first time suggests it might be his more natural position.

Its only one game, Packers linebackers coach Winston Moss said. I hate to speculate. Well take it a game at a time, but he looked awfully good in there. He looked extremely comfortable. He did play to some of his strengths that we liked with him when we evaluated him coming out of college, so if he continues to improve on that, well revisit that question maybe at the end of the year.

After a successful debut in place of injured starter Nick Barnett, Hawk almost certainly will finish the season as the starting middle linebacker. There were some scouts who believed Hawk was more suited to play the middle after the Packers drafted him fifth overall in 2006. But the Packers had long been reluctant to move Barnett, the starter in the middle since 2003.

Hawk had no trouble getting the play calls to his teammates and seemed to excel while operating more in the box and less in coverage than he did playing the weak side.

Weve always thought (Hawk) had great instincts, and those instincts showed up (on Sunday), Moss said. When his matchup is more in the box, it allowed him to stay in the box and actually be a little bit more aggressive. When that tight end is releasing all the time and he has to get downfield and cover and has to play in space, I think he does an adequate job of that, but he is better staying around the box and playing up the field and attacking guys as opposed to playing off and reacting to the guy.

Defensive coordinator Bob Sanders used his nickel defense (with two linebackers and a fifth defensive back) almost exclusively against the Bears, pairing Hawk with Brandon Chillar. On most plays in the nickel, Hawk played Barnetts spot while Chillar played Hawks old position. Sanders used his base defense on just five snaps (three on the first series and two on the second).

Driver hurting

[ul]Donald Driver hasnt been listed on the injury report, but the 33-year old receiver has been ailing.

Coach Mike McCarthy wouldnt offer specifics, but on the telecast of Sundays game, Fox analyst Troy Aikman said Driver has a turf toe injury and had his hand stepped on during a recent game. McCarthy said Driver probably wont practice Wednesday but gave no indication that the injuries would keep Driver out of Mondays game at New Orleans.

Donald has some little things, and I think its like a lot of players, McCarthy said. He has some things he deals with during the course of the week, but its nothing where hes missed any practice time. Thats probably why Im going to give him a day this week to get back healthy.

Driver had four catches for 60 yards against the Bears.

You take things for granted with Driver in terms of hes always available, hes always out there and hes usually very productive, offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said. Unless you really examine those medical reports, which I typically dont unless someones out, Im sure hes battling through a number of things and to his credit hes always at practice, always out there in the games and making plays. Its impressive what hes been able to do.

McCarthy didnt mention any other injuries as a result of Sundays game. He said Barnett is scheduled for a Thursday operation to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament.[/ul]

Rodgers feeling good
[ul]Quarterback Aaron Rodgers sprained right shoulder might finally be healed.

Not only was Rodgers not sacked against the Bears, he didnt take any hits in the game.

I met with (team physician) Pat McKenzie (Monday), and this is the best Aarons felt coming out of the game, McCarthy said. I dont think he was hit in the football game, so that definitely helps.

Rodgers was a full participant in practice last Thursday and Friday, marking the first time since his Sept. 28 injury that he wasnt limited in practice. The Packers have an extra day of practice this week because of the Monday night game against the Saints, so its possible Rodgers wont be full-go every day in practice.

Left tackle Chad Clifton, who also was a rare full participant in practice last Wednesday and Thursday, might also get additional work this week.

Hell go back-to-back, which days I havent determined yet, McCarthy said. Its important based on where he is with his situation medically that he doesnt go three days in a row.[/ul]

No Flynn
[ul]When the Packers took possession with a 34-3 lead and 6:02 remaining in Sundays game against the Bears, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to get rookie backup quarterback Matt Flynn some work.

Besides, McCarthy had pulled Clifton and right tackle Mark Tauscher, meaning Rodgers could have been at greater risk of getting hit. But McCarthy never made the move at quarterback because he said Flynn wasnt warmed up in time for the start of that series.

The series before is when we started talking about it, McCarthy said. Then we actually got the ball and I talked about putting him in in the middle of the series, and I just didnt want to do that. I wanted him to start the series. It just didnt work out. It would have been good to have gotten him some snaps there, though.

[/ul]Schedule note

[ul]The Packers game against the Carolina Panthers at Lambeau Field on Nov. 30 will remain a noon kickoff, the NFL announced Monday. The only Week 13 change under the NFLs flexible schedule is the New York Jets home game against the Denver Broncos. It was moved from noon to 3:15 p.m. and will be televised on CBS.[/ul]

Question is... How does Barnett feel about Hawk's standout performance? He's a team player, so I'm sure he's glad the team won, but I'd have a hard time believing Barnett's not at least jealous. maybe a little pissed.

I hope it's motivation for him to play better than he has. Not saying he has played poorly; there's always room to improve. Even Barnett can benefit from a little old-fashioned competition.

Maybe he comes in and tries to outplay Hawk at WLB? Lol, I just want both of them to play up to their potentiatl, regardless of what LB position it is at.

I could end up loving Hawk at Mike and Barnett at Will. I'm a big fan of both players... hope it works out.

Barnett on the weakside makes sense. He's a smaller backer and normally those smaller linebackers don't play the middle. Usually the bigger guy does.

The problem is the Packers keep Barnett in the middle because he's good in pass coverage. Better than A.J. Hawk. A lot better actually. Troy Aikman pointed out Sunday though that Hawk was doing a great job and it wasn't like any players were sitting wide open in the middle of the field. If Hawk can prove he's an even average or above average pass defender, he might earn that middle linebacker spot.

Of course they can scheme around the problem and use the two in different types of situations. Such as running downs use Hawk in the middle and passing downs, use Barnett. Like they do with Cullen Jenkins. Use him at DE on 1st and 2nd down, but 3rd down he's a DT. Works for him and I don't see why they can't make it work for Barnett and Hawk.

We were able to stop their run game all day long with just two LBs on the field. I love it...

My favorite play by Hawk was on an ordinary handoff between the right guard and right tackle. Hawk got in there and took out the FB, forcing the RB to hesitate, then the rest of the defense finished him off. That's something he can do that Barnett cannot.

What he can't do as well as Barnett is play sideline-to-sideline, because he's not as fast. But when the Bears tried to exploit the edge, the Packer defense was able to string it out so the DB's could make the plays. It will be interesting to see how other teams try to attack this defense. The Saints will be much harder to stop.

Zero2Cool (3h) : Merry Christmas!
beast (12h) : Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
beast (20h) : Sounds like no serious injuries from the Saints game and Jacobs and Watson should play in the Vikings game
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : both games Watson missed, Packers won
Martha Careful (24-Dec) : I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas!
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
Zero2Cool (24-Dec) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (23-Dec) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (23-Dec) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (23-Dec) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I see what you did there Mucky
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : dammit. 3:25pm
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : Upon receiving the news about Luke Musgrave, I immediately fell to the ground
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : Yeah baby!
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : LUKE MUSGRAVE PLAYING TONIGHT~!~~~~WOWHOAAOHAOAA yah
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (23-Dec) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (23-Dec) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (23-Dec) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (23-Dec) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (23-Dec) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (23-Dec) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
