To accrue a full season a player has to get full pay for 6 games. So if Schum is on IR for 6 weeks, he will be a FA in ’18.

A player with less than 4 years of experience cant be put on IR before first cut down unless they clear waivers. GB subjected him to waivers; so they could use his spot on roster 90.

If Schum’s on PUP, that time does not count toward an accrued season. But, I think only those on active PUP [Preseason PUP] are eligible for reserve PUP [in-season PUP]. Though I’m thinking they could activate him off IR just before start of season and then immediately put him on active PUP; then to reserve PUP on final cut-down.

I’m thinking Ted’s releasing of Schum was a small gamble as opposed to just putting him on active PUP so Ted can use that 90th roster spot.

If Schum’s back was trashed requiring IR, I cant see GB keeping him. I bet Schum had a minor injury that requires some rest or he had a minor procedure and they expect him back [no pun intended] during camp. This cut/resign deal lets them have 90 guys ‘til Schum is ready to play.

Just had someone get back to me.

If a player goes on IR after the start of the new league year, they cant play for that year unless DTR, this year we will get 2 DTRs.

Apparently Schum's back is trashed and he will not play for anyone this year unless GB cuts him. They may have decided to the cut and resigned to gain more time to work out an injury settlement and not be hamstrung with only 89 roster spots. It makes zero sense for GB to keep him on IR and pay him thru 2017, just to have him be and UFA in '18.

I think what is happening, is that the Packers released Schum from the 90 man roster and he went though waivers, and since
• no one claimed him, and
• since he's injured
his contract was moved from the 90 man roster list over to the Packers IR list.
• So I'm under the impression his contract was never released, just moved to IR, since teams can't release injured players contracts during the season without an injury settlement.

If Schum was waived/injured other teams can claim him if not, his contract reverts to GB in 24 hrs. This is what you are referring to and now I'm pretty sure this is what actually occurred.

GB now has 5 days to reach an injury settlement; if not Schum stays on IR until he passes a physical. Schum's motivation for reaching an agreement is that, he'll get a good chunk of his contract and when the settlement is reached he immediately becomes an UFA.

But, Schum cannot resign with GB until the time of the injury settlement has passed plus 3 weeks [used to be 6 weeks].

As you said, it seems to have been reported incorrectly somewhere along the line, which is adding communication troubles. But I believe Schum waived/injured and his contract reverted back to GB after not being claimed and that's why he's back.

Yeah they're making a ton of rule changes... one other item you mentioned that players could go on the IR and then comeback via DTR spot (which there is now 2 of them?)...

First off, I still believe in an "All or None" system, where all the IRed players should be able to return after __ number of weeks or none of them.

Second off, I know it used to be (under the old rule) that players had to make the final 53 man roster to be eligibility for the DTR spots... has that changed? ... can a player go on the IR in the offseason and still have a DTR spot? I'm thinking no, but they're changed so many rules, so fast, that I haven't been able to keep up.

I think they have to go on the PUP list (or become a FA) if they're injured during the offseason and still might play during the season. So is the DTR just for players on the 53 man roster?

Last year the CB made the 53 man roster for one day, before they IRed him and then brought him back later on in the season.

There are three means for an injured player to come back and play during the season.

DTR spots are only for those who were on the 53man roster.

PUP is for players who where injured in the previous season or during camp activities.

There is also Reserve/Non-Football Injury, which operates basically like PUP only for players injured outside of team activities.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!
