Listening to sports radio today and they had a interesting subject line on overpaid under performing Packers...Clay was run through the grinder but the a surprising cap stat came up on how much Randall Cobb will receive this year as a Packer. His 2017 contract calls for Randall to make $12,656,250. This makes him the third highest paid Packer behind Aaron and Clay. It also makes him the seventh highest paid receiver in the NFL and the 56th highest paid player in the league. I like Cobb as a player but this really shocked me and think we could get better results for that kind of money. There is a 6.5 million cap hit to cut him this season but I really think a renegotiation of this ridiculousness contract has to be addressed. Put Jordy in the slot then draft a true speedster receiver and Cobb could become expendable.

Sounds like a restructure could be in order. Flush some of that salary to later years? Cobb is a trusted option for Rodgers so I don't want to see him cut out right. But at this point in time unless Ted Thompson is adamant about bringing in fresh blood from free agency (which is doubtful), we don't need anyone to take a pay cut. We should have near 50 million to spend.

I saw Victor Cruz was released today and thought we could pay him a lot less than Randall. 6.5 million dead money makes this almost impalatable for Ted.

However, we'd save 6mil and could add Cruz for much less than that. I know Cruz has really been through it but I think he can still play.

Randall has been a major bust since he signed his contract. He epitomizes the cited reason why we don't use FA. No reason not to pay an outsider big money vs your own. Even when you think you have an advantage because he's your own it's just as big of a gamble. I'd rather give money to the better player whether he's ours or someone else.

RC18 is so young still. Can't see us giving up on him but there's zero question he's another one of our terrible overpays and something needs to be done about it.

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."

It's absurd for Cobb to be the third highest paid Packers player and more absurd for him to be the seventh highest paid receiver.
This is a typical Ted Thompson boner.
I have been hearing this for weeks on ESPN radio and it really grinds my guts.

If he leaves, I swear to christ if they put Monty back there carrying the ball more than 10 times a game I'm going to throw a beer bottle through my TV, straight to lambeau and into the back of Mike McCarthy's head, ricocheting off and hitting Ted Thompson in the balls.

Take Cobb out of the picture for a moment. Assume he is gone and there is no dead money. Would you be willing to pay 6 million for another WR with his talent, experience and comfort level to come in and be one of ARs go to guys.

That's the real question because although his cap hit is 12 million we are on the hook for 6 regardless. If we cut him we have 6 million in dead cap space so you can look at it as we are getting a very good WR for 6 million dollars. I think he is worth it.

Ted really doesn't like to be known as the kind of guy who giveth and then taketh away. He signs guys to deals and for the most part he honors those deals. If he were more active in free agency it may be a bigger deal but on the other hand signing guys to large long term deals then cutting them when they get too expensive may not be the best reputation to cultivate.

Of course if he is truly on his way out who better to cut the deadwood than the guy leaving rather than the new guy coming in.

Nobody had a problem paying him 1million for a pro-bowl season. Have to remember NFL contracts are not just based on what he did today, but also what he did in the past. That said, I was never a big fan of his contract. He is an example of playing big in a contract year and it resulted in us over paying for him. But the question is, can his production be replaced at a lesser price.

Without finding some buried treasure, we are not going to bring in a replacement FA that can produce 800yards 5-6TD for 6.5mil. So that means we would have to produce that yards and TDs from somebody inhouse already.

His contract is a little more difficult to rework. He is due about 18 million over the remaining two years. Might be able to convert 10 of that to a signing bonus with a two year extension. With a base salary of 2-3million the next two years with an increase in 2019 when the previous signing bonus drops off. would clear about 4 million each of the next two years against the cap while Cobb gets more guaranteed now.

Or we pay him this year, see how he performs and how healthy he remains and look at his contract next year when the dead money would be 1/2 of what it is today.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!
