I was probably harder on Ryan than he deserved this season, I do think he has a nose for the ball and a pretty confident tackler. However the thought of him in space dropping back into coverage makes me shake. We don't need a "complete" linebacker if we go the draft route, I'd be perfectly fine if we got some guy who was a little light but could run. We need someone for third downs to cover the damn drag routes. Too many times Linebackers got mixed up on those type of plays last year or couldn't turn and run. We've got to fix that.

Is there some kind of reason we couldn't sign a stop gap 30 year old player to a 3 year contract while grooming a young linebacker? Do we have to continue doing this on the job training and being gashed up the middle of our defense because we lack an experienced inside linebacker?

How much better are the free agent ILBs than the ILBs we got? If it’s a little bit, should we slow the youngsters’ development for someone like AJ Hawk? If the FA are a lot better, are we better off using the money for two good FA ILBs inside for 10M or give the 10M to Daniels? And then HOPE AND PRAY that the FAs perform, which they usually don’t anyways.

Aren’t we better off having drafted a stud CB in Randall over a decent ILB [Anthony or Kendricks]; and then live with Barrington, Ryan and Thomas?
Ted Thompson is not choosing to accept mediocrity at ILB, because he’s not a lone kid in a penny candy store with 1 million to spend as some fans see him and choosing not to buy any candy. Ted Thompson has to make choices where each draft pick or spending decision weakens another position and some of those choices involve choosing the lesser of evils. Ted Thompson is competing against 31 other GMs and a salary cap; he doesn’t get to do everything he wants to do!

MillerTime wants of Tahir Whitehead, so do I and so does TT. There’s only one problem: it isnt up to Ted. Detroit loves him; Tahir and his family love Detroit; Tulloch is being cut to move Tahir to MLB, and the only way Ted Thompson can get him is to way overpay and maybe not even then.

I think Clay Mathews needs to mostly stay inside in a hybrid role. I don't think he is good enough to be a full-time OLB anymore.

But as always, draft the best available player and let the rest shake out.

I don't understand this idea that Clay Matthews can't play on the outside anymore. He's still the Packers best player on defense (Maybe Daniels could make an argument).

He's been still playing OLB quite a bit the last 2 seasons and he really hasn't had the impact out there he used to. It's still probably his best position but it was better for the defense having him play inside and he was having just as much impact there as he was in his snaps outside which is why I disagree with anybody saying it's unacceptable that he's been playing inside.

And I'm on record, since before last year's draft, of being a fan of Ryan.

Maybe Ted has not been able to get better than Barrington, Ryan, and Thomas. That could well be. But that is a far different argument than saying it is okay to "live with" those three. A championship GM can (or should) never stop exploring all alternatives to improve all positions that have been as week as GB's ILB has been over several years. Moving your best outside pass rusher to the inside should not have to be a long-term solution.

The "there are 31 other GMs going after the same pool" argument makes sense for any individual year. It is not an argument when Ted Thompson has not done something for multiple years running. I fully understand that in any single year, Ted Thompson may not be able to upgrade this or that position in any significant way. But it has been six years now effing years since the last SB. Six years. If Ted Thompson is truly better than the average GM, he ought to be able to improve more at ILB than he has, IMO.

It's the same argument I've made again and again about TT's history re: the talent at OT. When a position doesn't significantly improve over half a decade, the best explanations are all bad: Either "Ted has not given serious attention to all ways of upgrading" and/or "Ted isn't good enough at getting max value per dollar invested" and/or "Ted and company aren't very good at assessing pro talent at ILB" and/or "Ted and company aren't very good at assessing college talent at ILB."

I'm not saying we should get rid of Ted Thompson (though I'd trade him for Belichek in a second if that was possible). But if I were in the shoes of Mark Murphy or the Executive Committee I'd be telling him he needs to do better, because I don't want personnel shortcomings that remain unsolved for half a decade or more, and that *has* been a feature of Ted Thompson's tenure.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
