Also hopefully Hayward stays healthy... I think he lacks the deep speed but he seems to have great instincts in coverage. And with the other vets CBs gone (other than Shields) it just seems too obvious (if he's healthy)... but of course too obvious means it could be the most correct.

Hasn't Daniels already stepped up, and past the step up phase?

If back to full health, I think Barclay could perfectly fill an OG position if someone go injured which the OGs have been battling injuries for the past couple of years.

Abbrederis and Barrington should be in the conversation.

Nick Perry may not make the team; Datone Jones is about down to his last chance and may be gone after this season; Sean Richardson better perform well on special teams because he's definitely nothing special as a Safety; Hayward I have hope for, but he's an injury waiting to happen; Barclay is a good backup O Lineman, no more/no less.; Daniels was already pretty far up, but yeah, he may step up more; Ditto that for Barrington.

My Five:

Jayrone Elliot - If he is given a chance, he will be excellent.

Jeff Janis - I foresee a shitstorm from the detractors in here hahahahaha - he, too, if given a chance, will be great, definitely one of the top three receivers

HaHa Clinton-Dix - Like Daniels, he's pretty much already up, but I think he can play at a higher level yet.

J.C. Tretter - should prove to be a solid backup in preseason and heir apparent to Bulaga - hopefully not needed during the season.

Scott Tolzien - hopefully is a clipboard holding superstar all season, but I bet he really shows up in the preseason and heaven forbid, if necessary during the season.

Rookies don't count, right? I foresee both Randall and Rollins as star-quality and one or the other to beat out Hayward as a quality starter. Abbrederis is basically still a rookie too, but I expect him to get some catches and maybe show up as a punt returner. Montgomery and Hundley I expect to see performing and doing well out of their college positions - Montgomery as a 3rd down RB and Hundley as an occasional TE or WR - but still showing potential at QB in the preseason. Nobody has said a word about Christian Ringo. I'm not predicting anything, but we could use another decent 3-4 DE - maybe he will step up - or maybe they switch him to Center because of his name (just kidding). Thornton and Goodson look like throwaways, but I'm not ruling them out either.

If Matthews is to start at ILB, Perry could be the starters at OLB. And everyone would be loving on Datone Jones right now if he wasn't a half step slow on 5 sacks he just barely missed as the QB barely got the ball out before he finished them off. Take of letting Guion/Raji getting time on the field together and letting Datone take more of a breather so he's fresher for the passing down so hopefully he finish it, but I could see him being the pass rush specialist for the future.

When healthy he hasn't been a phenom pass rusher like you want from a 1st round pick but he's not out there losing games for us. 1st round pick or not when he's not injured he's good enough to be worth a roster spot and he's been at least a starter quality player. There's really no reason to cut a guy like that outside of the usual fan "he's not worth a 1st round pick" anger.

Datone is a different story. Yes he's been a 1 trick pony as a pass rush specialist but there's no team in the league that wouldn't gladly open a roster spot for a high level pass rusher on the d-line. You hope he turns into an every down type of guy but even if he doesn't he can still get to the qb and in the NFL today that's the most important thing.

Now to not stray too far off topic the guys I think are going to step up this year are:
1) Hayward, think he'll prove he's a legit starting CB
2) HaHa, think he'll become a top level S in the league
3) CMIII, he's been in a bit of a slump based on what he's capable of for about a year and a half and I think he'll continue where he left off the last bit of 2014 and get back to being an elite player
4) Barrington, I don't think he'll ever be a one of the best ILB in the league or anything but I see him stepping up in his 2nd year as a starter and giving us finally someone stable at the position.
5) Richard Rodgers, He's the type of guy I see doing what it takes to get the most out of his abilities and actually reaching his potential. I think he'll greatly improve his blocking this year and becoming a reliable possession guy in the passing game giving us an actual starting quality all-around TE finally.

It's a lot more likely scenario for Elliot to make Perry expendable and maybe somebody else outplaying Jones. They don't need to do anything "horrible" - just keep on playing to the level they already have - if somebody else plays better and maybe for less money.

If Perry was the UDFA playing against the 4th and 5th string OTs in preseason games you'd be cheering for him too... as he'd whip those nobodies extremely easy just like Elliot did. On defense Elliot hasn't shown anything on defense yet, that Perry hasn't done better in a real game other than stay healthy for a whole season.
