Uffda, I'm curious to hear how you think Ted Thompson ranks in terms of other GMs. Which would you rather have in charge of the packers? This should be a straight forward question. I am not trying to troll you are anything like that, I am genuinely interested.

If you're not happy with the criteria others have used to make their selections, or the resulting choices, explain what you think would be the best way to rank them, and of course, how they stack up under your criteria.

Trades? Almost never makes any of any substance.

FA? Almost refuses to use it.

UDFA...does extremely well here.

Salary cap? Overpays his own as I cited Hawk's example. Guy had to play for years when he was brutal because of the anchor of a contract. I listed several guys he's overpaid.

You can't look at all these categories cited as the criteria and then write about how great he is but people do. Rank him in the categories. He isn't Top 5 in trades...isn't Top 5 in FA...isn't Top 5 in drafting...yet, somehow he's firmly in the Top 5 in the NFL? Why? How? Our record winning the division vs. inferior teams that were very poorly run? Ted Thompson got Aaron Rodgers. That is his calling card and always will be. He caught a major stroke of luck but that doesn't mean he's been consistently great. He hasn't.

I've already told you it's not something I could honestly do. I couldn't rate the other 31 GM's as I don't follow their teams closely enough to do so. If I did that, I would be making stuff up but that doesn't stop some in this thread.

What I have said is I would prefer Ron Wolf to Ted Thompson. Neither were great drafters but Ron went for it. His mentality was far different than Ted Thompson and he created an aura that we don't have and will never have under TT. I have said I would love Jim Harbaugh...no clue how he would fare as a GM/HC but his mentality is one I love and fully respect.

How do you know that Ted Thompson isn't in the top 5 in various categories if you can't rank him? Clearly, if he isn't in the top 5 as you say, you know of at least 5 GMs who rate higher. If you can't rank him overall, how do you rank him in each individual category?

It's understandable if you don't feel up to rating all 32 GMs, I think there are few people who would be honestly qualified to do that. However, if you're certain that others are better, surely you have some idea who those people are.

As for his drafting, if you look at his 1st round failures and his overall prowess on D it's pretty easy to figure he ain't top 5 there. I would guess he's Top 5 in UDFA's...he had two starting CB's from the UDFA market but I really don't know.

If I claimed Eddie Lacy wasn't a top 5 running back, it would be reasonable to expect me to list which 5 running backs are better. Why is this impossible for you to do in this case?

Ted Thompson does use free agency, however, often with his own players rather than other team's. Regardless, any complaints you would have with his effectiveness in free agency would factor into how you rate him relative to other GMs.

Let me get this straight...you consider when Ted Thompson signs a Packer that he has "used FA"? So, the years he did not extend them prior to FA where he could've, he gets a good grade from you for letting them get to FA where he overpays to keep them? If he was that great, he would extend prior to FA in order to save us more money. He didn't want to pay Randall. He gambled. He lost...TT, that is. He had to give him 10 million to keep him. It is pretty amazing that Ted Thompson felt pressured to dole out 10 mil to Randall with a superstar in Davante just waiting in the wings? I thought that was more the Ted Thompson way? Draft a guy and when he can't afford him let him go and just replace him with another draft choice?

Here's what I've consistently said of Ted Thompson and will never change. He has arguably the best QB in NFL history in Aaron Rodgers. He doesn't "go for it". He plays safe trying to set up being "competitive" for 5 years from now. That is his priority...competitive 5 years from now not SB champs THIS year. Forward thinking is good, but he is way too forward thinking and is missing what is right here right now. We have the kind of QB that can and should win MULTIPLE SB's like Brady, Big Ben, etc. Shoot, he's way better than Big Ben but Ben had a D that Rodgers never seems to have despite our GM trying over and over and over to fix a brutal defense. No Top 5 GM has a QB like Rodgers and ain't getting to more than ONE SB. If we had a Top 5 GM we'd be in multiples or already have been, or at the very least he would've died trying.

Rodgers and Brady are comparable QB's but one of them has been to multiple SB's. Why? One team has a better GM and by a wide margin. I've already mentioned Pittsburgh...why has their team been there so much more than ours? Better org. Eli has more SB's than Rodgers. Give me a guy who can lead us to more than one freaking SB with a 1st ballot HOF QB. We have a cake walk every year to the division with the slop that's been in our division. We consistently fail in the playoffs. I believe with all my heart if Ron Wolf was the Wolf of Favre's era and he was GM'ing us we would have not only been to multiples we would've won multiples.

Want a GM who realizes the time is NOW to go for it. If Ted Thompson was an EKG he'd be flatlining.

I suppose I only have myself to blame for being optimistic enough to think you would add something to the conversation other than tired rhetoric.

Oh well, I'm still interesting in hearing how others would rank Ted Thompson in relation to other current GMs in the NFL.

It's funny to see those who want to say Top 5 when they don't have a clue about any other team's GM, either. What they will reduce it to is W-L's. I tried telling you this in my first response that the uneducated fan will just regurgitate what he's heard or read not what he knows. It will be based on Wins and Losses but it dismisses the possibility that a GM of a team who wins quite a bit might be holding that team back.

I get it...it is more fun to pretend. I did that as a kid but as I got older I realized it wasn't real and it wasn't fun if it wasn't real. Hoping that happens for you.

It would be more fun to believe Damarious Randall is the second coming of Deion Sanders but I know he isn't so I won't begin to pretend.

Simple question.

You've said Ted Thompson is middle of the road.

What 15 teams Gm's are better than Ted Thompson?

I haven't graded Ted Thompson on a curve. I can see he's done well at offensive skill positions and brutally on the other side of the ball. Doesn't use FA, doesn't make trades, overpays his own...yes, a little above average. The weight of his offensive and UDFA prowess outweighs his multiple 1st round failures and defensive shortcomings. He doesn't really use FA or trades so there isn't much I can grade. He does overpay his own which is a negative of his.
