This has truly been the year of the coach in sports. First it was Jim Harbaugh. The well-known ‘berserker’ made the word obnoxious seem tame. And after a career overall record of 49-22-1 in four years, which included one Super Bowl appearance, the San Francisco 49ers decided to roll up the worn-out welcome mat. [...]

ON a team like ours, not just due to the "draft and develop" philosophy, but where we take these UDFAs and make players out of them on a regular basis, I think coaching DOES make a difference.

I think the team's emphasis on avoiding head cases also helps.

I think something else is at work which isn't really a measurable. Does a coach create an "atmosphere". Do the players want to play hard for him? Does he handle the big egos? That affects some teams more than others but it's a factor.

The other thing is the adjustments. We used to beat the pants off the Bears all the time because Holmgren was great at making half time adjustments and the Bears coaches were terrible at it. From a purely x's and o's standpoint this can have a big effect. If a coach can't adapt to changing game/league conditions (see Martz, Mike) he's going to be left in the dust.

I think coaching matters less in the NBA than it does in the NFL and MLB since the NBA is becoming more and more "Playground ball".
No matter which sport, coaching at the pro level is a tough job.
I like the psychologist analogy and I think the old phrase, " speak softly and carry a big stick" no longer applies when coaching pro athletes.
It's more like speak softly and carry a soft stick.
I think the likes of Vince Lombardi, George Halas, Tom Landry and Bud Grant would have a hard time "coaching" in this day and age.

Good coaches are good teachers and motivators. Player talent doesn't mean squat if the coaches can't put them in position to succeed. I don't see why general managers get so much praise for players who do well. All players have athletic talent and skills. Coaches bring it out in them.

Unfortunately money seems to be the biggest motivator in this day and age.

The great coaches would have been great coaches in any era. They were great because they understood people psychologically. They would adapt to succeed. I wish I could explain myself better, but if one reads any book about Lombardi it would explain.

Actually the difference in talent between players, outside of a few outliers, is not that great.

The 2 things that separates the good coaches from bad are:

1. The ability to create a culture that emphasizes team play, enhances cerebral aspects of the game, creates trust and conducts their business like men both on and off the field. Guys have to eat right, sleep right, stretch right, hydrate, workout, not get stupid, etc on their own 24/7/365 to prevent injuries, to be available and to be available at peak physical shape.

2. With limited practice time, the ability to max reps by practicing at a fast and efficient pace and properly delegate reps between starters , back-ups and developing youngsters is paramount.

MM is great at both.

All coaches are good at the x & o's; but McCarthy preparing this team to go into Seattle was one of the greatest coaching performances I've ever seen. EVERY TEAM up by 12 that INTs w/ 4 min to go, or the equivalent in any sporting event, will let down...EVERY TEAM. It's just that usually the other team lets down too; the team ahead makes 1-2 good plays and/or the comeback simply falls short; so no one gives the let down a second thought.

This is a classic case of a sentence with a BUT. Of course coaching matters, especially in a negative way if you get a guy who makes dumb decisions - in any sport. Good motivators also bring a degree of benefit ....... BUT .......

You gotta have the players. You either need a whole lot of quality through and through OR you need one player who is just so good that he carries the team to the top. Aaron Rodgers, of course, is that. Brett Favre was that before Rodgers. Honestly, the Packers would be a step and a half above mediocre over the last couple of decades without those two. McCarthy gets credit for not screwing things up; Ditto that in even a bigger way for Ted Thompson; BUT Rodgers and Favre have MADE the reputation of the people running the team in their tenures.

The only comparable cases I can think of in Wisconsin sports has been Lew Alcindor with Larry Costello as his coach. Other than our own teams, Michael Jordan in basketball, maybe Lebron James now, and Peyton Manning in the NFL are the only ones I can think of.

The coaches really determine the teams mentality. For example, compare Belicheck and McCarthy. One coach has a team with no mercy, who you never see anyone come back from behind against. The other takes his foot off the gas every time, and pays for it. I'd rather have the coach who keeps his foot on the throttle no matter what the score.
