Ted discusses day 2 picks

Following the close of day two of the 2015 NFL Draft, Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson spoke to the media, addressing the Packers' decisions to draft cornerback Quinten Rollins in round two and wide receiver Ty Montgomery in the third round.

Here are some of Ted's comments from the press conference.

"We kinda set a plan, it's a simple plan, but we tried to make sure we got football players and we think we got a few more tonight."
On what he saw in Quinten Rollins: "Well, you watch him play! You watch his ball skills, he's really kind of remarkable, it's surprising...he's a pretty natural football player."

On Ty Montgomery and why he's so good in the return game: "He's a very strong runner, very instinctive, has good quickness, all the things you look for. The key thing is his strength level is better than most...(return ability is) always a factor, it wasn't an overriding factor, but it was a factor in how we ranked them."

Why did you take another wide receiver? "We've got an offensive head coach. The game is that sort of game. Since I've been here, we've had Brett Favre playing quarterback or Aaron Rodgers, so you'd like to give them as many guys to throw to as you can."

Will the Packers address the inside linebackers before training camp? "We're gonna address that just like we address all the other positions. We're gonna make that as strong as we can. It's fine. (Why do you feel that way?) Because I'm a football guy. I have confidence in the fellows that we have.".......

I am chosen by many but taken by no one.

To expect Ted to hit on every player in the 1st 3 rnds is asking a bit much.
1. Drafting #30

2. Well documented that there was more value in the middle rounds not like last year where a player like HHCD was available at the bottom of the 1st

3. most of the top In LB's in this class were graded as middle 2nd RND players.

When Ted couldn't find a trade partner , the guys everyone were talking about went off the board before 62.

There are still ILB's available, let's see what happens today.
CB was a position of need, The Packers have 11 LB's listed on their roster already, sounds like they have confidence in those guys.

2. Yes, though he skipped over a lot of that value for both the second and third round picks, IMO.
3. Absolutely agree. The only ILB available at pick 62 was Dawson and, IMO that was too high for him (though I'd rather he'd stretch one round for Dawson than, two to four rounds for a project at CB. (One year of college experience IMO makes Rollins at best a fourth round project pick.

If the Packers are content with what they have on the roster for ILBs they are taking a major risk. The only reason the ILB corps made it to "serviceable" (and not "mediocre" or worse) was shifting CM3. And if you are going to keep him playing a lot of ILB, you had dang well better pick up another stud outside pass rusher for when he is shifted.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

I like what Thompson has done.

We needed help in the secondary it is likely one of the two DBs will result in a fine player. So that's a good job.
Then in a weak draft he got a gem in Montgomery, we have long forgotten what is having an elite returner and with Rodgers throwing this guy can become a very effective target.

Ted knows drafting guys for the front 7 is really difficult and he knows he has failed a lot when trying that so he will probably throw a few darts in the late rounds of the draft and if they work they work and if not bad luck.

Without Hawk and Jones our LB position is significantly upgraded and not weakened, it would be hard to put guys there that will play worst than Hawk and he was a starter for several years so I agree we should be fine.
