Ty Montgomery | Wide Receiver | Stanford | 6'0" - 216 lbs.

STRENGTHS: Top athlete when healthy. Well-built with long arms, broad shoulders and a thick lower half. Appears well-suited to making the jump to the NFL. Quickly accelerates to leave defenders in his wake and is very aggressive, bursting upfield and fighting through arm tackles to generate positive yardage rather than dancing to avoid contact. He shows good hand-eye coordination to pluck the ball out of the air. Flashes toughness to take the big hit. Comes from a pro-style offense and program with exceptional academic standards, should be able to handle an NFL playbook.

WEAKNESSES: Like a lot of players with a rocked-up build, doesn't possess ideal lateral agility and flexibility, making him a bit straight-linish. Average explosion out of his breaks, perhaps one of the reasons why most of his damage came on vertical or quick screens. Allows too many passes to get to his pads, resulting in some ugly drops in which the ball simply goes right through his fingers. Accelerates fluidly and impressively for a man of his build but there is some question as to his pure speed. Could be seen as a bit of a one-trick pony whose greatest value in the NFL could be as a fourth receiver and kick returner.

PLAYER OVERVIEW
After a breakout junior season in which the Dallas native racked up 2,208 all-purpose yards (third-most in school history) in helping the Cardinal finish 11-3 and a Rose Bowl berth, Montgomery (and Stanford) appeared to be destined for greatness in 2014. Montgomery took a step back due to injuries and inconsistency, leaving scouts wondering if his spectacular junior season was a fluke.
In 2013, Montgomery earned consensus All-American honors as a kick returner, averaging 30.3 yards per opportunity with touchdowns. He also led Stanford with 61 catches for 958 yards and 10 TDs, many of the dramatic variety. In 2014, he struggled with a shoulder injury and drops. He matched last year's total for receptions but all three of his touchdowns came over the first four games and he finished with only 603 receiving yards.

Flashed early on at Stanford, emerging as a starter in the final four games of his freshman season in 2012, catching seven passes for 120 yards in the Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma State. Torn knee ligaments derailed most of his sophomore season and he finished with 26 catches for 213 yards.

Montgomery has an imposing build and his dual-threat ability as a receiver and returner could still earn him top 64 consideration. Concerns about his durability, agility and hands could impact his final grade.

Shocked we picked a WR not named Lockett late. Would have expected a TE for effect if we were hitting a Offense boost.

Hope he proves me wrong, but I have to admit this has been a head-scratching night.

He seems to have been used as a receiver and a running back in Stanford's offense.

Definitely good KR/PR numbers, but I wonder if they use him out of the backfield in a Cobb like way.

Definitely did not expect a WR drafted since we had Adams, Abbrederis, and Janis on roster.

He looks like a beast to me. I like our record with pass catchers.

This is REALLY interesting.

I have total confidence in Ted. Most here do not. Heretofore, I am sending him an e-mail to "Thank Him" personally for making Kevin's Packer Forum such a great read over the next three months.

Let the Ted Bashing begin.

My friend "Hazer" is up first I hope...

Draft Watch
Ty Montgomery, WR, Stanford
Outlook: Montgomery’s a big, fast, and versatile receiver. He displays outstanding run after the catch ability and is especially dangerous in the open field. He can also contribute as a return man. Because of his size (6-2 & 215 pounds) and speed combo, he‘s not your ordinary slot receiver. Most slot receivers are small and quick, but Montgomery’s size makes him a unique prospect. In a sense, he’s a larger version of Green Bay wide receiver Randall Cobb. Based on his ability and production, he’s a candidate to forgo his senior season and enter the 2014 NFL Draft.

6. Ty Montgomery, Stanford
A versatile receiver with a terrific burst and acceleration, Montgomery’s tape tells two different stories. His 2013 season was outstanding, where he emerged as one of the Pac-12’s biggest playmakers, while his 2014 tape disappointed likely due to an injured hamstring. His hands are inconsistent; he’s not going to catch everything thrown his way. He shows a lack of concentration in catching the ball in traffic. However, his burst is terrific. When you think he’s covered, he turns on his jets to separate himself from defenders. He’ll likely play the slot, where teams can use his elusiveness to create mismatches. He has terrific run after catch ability. In many ways, he moves more like a running back than receiver. Like a running back, he shows terrific patience in waiting for his blockers to get out in front. His struggles against press coverage could hurt him in the NFL. When he played Michigan State’s vaunted secondary in the 2014 Rose Bowl, he struggled mightily with their physicality.

I had him No. 26 in my top 100. I value his 2013 tape. He was hurt last year.

This guy has 5 special teams TDs in college. It'll be nice to have a dangerous kick returner without putting Cobb at risk.

beast (10h) : Thanks dfosterf, I'm still kicking myself for last week, as I forgot to change to pick Vikings and Lions... after putting in a holding spot.
Zero2Cool (12h) : First alternate: Elgton Jenkins Other alternates: Jordan Love, Kenny Clark, Keisean Nixon, Tucker Kraft, Josh Myers, Jaire Alexander
Zero2Cool (12h) : Pro Bowl still a thing? Guess Packers have three. Jacobs, Gary, McKinney.
dfosterf (12h) : It's a mine field with all the players sitting, etc
dfosterf (12h) : There was quite a bit of "chalk" matchups this year it seemed, but not this week coming up
Zero2Cool (12h) : Or we got better and by we I mean everyone except me
Zero2Cool (12h) : We have about six that by percent would have won nearly any season. I guess 2024 was predictable 🤷
Zero2Cool (12h) : You can check previous seasons. I quick did it and don't think anyone hit 70% before
dfosterf (12h) : Hats off to the Beast
dfosterf (12h) : I'm at 71.76% in pick 'em. 2nd place. Beast is at a flat 75% 9 games ahead. That 75% has got to be unprecedented this late in the season
beast (13h) : I don't care deeply, just want some good entertaining games
Zero2Cool (13h) : BTW, not serious.
Zero2Cool (13h) : You don't care about it either!!!!
Zero2Cool (13h) : NIL and Portal killed college, no one cares about it.
Mucky Tundra (18h) : outside of Texas-Arizona St, it's been a snoozefest
beast (22h) : I expect Georgia will change that tomorrow, but we'll have to wait and see. If they do, then only Big 10 and SEC are left.
beast (22h) : So much for Conference Championship meaning something as 100% (so far) of the conference Champions lost their first playoff game.
Zero2Cool (1-Jan) : Jaire had surgery, season over.
Mucky Tundra (1-Jan) : I guess I need a new sig Pic. Boo
Mucky Tundra (1-Jan) : Eric Dickerson approves of this decision
beast (1-Jan) : Eagles are resting RB Saquon Barkley, so there is no chance he breaks the record despite being just 101 yards from it
Zero2Cool (1-Jan) : Patriots are waiving veteran pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue
beast (1-Jan) : Happy New Year's 🥳🎉
beast (31-Dec) : I want to them chant some songs for Daniel Whelan
beast (31-Dec) : Let's win one! Also, hopefully the Irish will stand with Daniel Whelan
Mucky Tundra (31-Dec) : After London and Brazil, I could go without an overseas game for a while
Zero2Cool (31-Dec) : Packers. Steelers. Ireland. 2025. Reports say.
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Matt Lafleur on if Jaire will play again this season. "Yeah I don't know... he's been dealing with swelling."
Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : After the way they played for most of the game yesterday, I don't see how you can sit anyone for the whole game
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : I'd say play everyone. Going into playoffs at 7th seed on two game lose streak - yucky
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Do the Packers have any best players?
beast (30-Dec) : Play or Rest*
beast (30-Dec) : Should the Packers play or free their best players vs the Bears?
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Packers should be 3 - 2 in the Division. Bonkers being swept by both Lions and Vikings. yikes
go.pack.go. (30-Dec) : All crazy stuff…and good point beast
beast (30-Dec) : Packers should be 0-5 in the division, can't say I saw that coming, even 1-4
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Sam Darnold 35 TD's ... another one
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Baker Mayfield, 39 TD's ... can't say I saw that one
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : No matter who is playing as 7th, I think we want them to win. Get rid of 2nd seed haha
go.pack.go. (30-Dec) : That would be dhazer who was rooting for Minnesota
beast (30-Dec) : Well, Commanders are currently the 6th seed and Packers the 7th
beast (30-Dec) : Who was it in Chat, that wanted the Vikings to win (because Lions fans upset them) because Packers could not lose the 6th seed?
beast (30-Dec) : If Falcons win, Packers stay as the 6th seed and Falcons lead the NFCS, if they lose, Commanders 6th and Bucs take NFCS lead
beast (30-Dec) : Win or Loss, the NFCS is going down to week 18
Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : if the Falcons win, how does that affect the overall NFC playoff picture? Does it mean that the NFC South comes down to week 18?
beast (30-Dec) : If Commanders win, the Packers drop to the 7th seed
beast (29-Dec) : Taylor still at it!
beast (29-Dec) : Colts get the ball and fumble turn over
packerfanoutwest (29-Dec) : Jets pull Aaron Rodgers for Tyrod Taylor
Mucky Tundra (29-Dec) : Colts-Giants now a tight one
