If you draft for needs in April/May you're drafting for stale needs, meaning, you're drafting needs for the prior season and not the upcoming season. Unless you have a DeLorean, this method is fruitless. We still have OTA's, Training Camp, Pre-Season and there could be all sorts of injuries that could dramatically change what is needed. This is why you always draft the best football players that you can.

As Ted Thompson says, you can never have too many good football players.

Obviously, it's a combination of the two. The difference is which end of the spectrum you tend to lean to. There also is such a thing as not drafting to positions where there is not need - although if we did that 100%, we might not have the greatest QB in the history of the world.

Getting Melvin Gordon now while Lacy is still at the top of his game and signed for cheap would be about the same as getting Rodgers when Favre was still around and good. It probably won't happen, but I'm still hoping.

As I have said, the Packers don't really have any urgent needs. That opens up the draft to all but a few spots - I doubt we need a high round QB or Safety. Pretty much everything else, though, is on the table.

The 1st round pick isn't the only guy that will play. You cannot fill all the positions your team needs with 1st round picks so if our 1st is not a ILB or CB that doesn't mean the draft is over for those positions. Our 1st round pick definitely does NOT need to be at either position.

You have to go get the best player on the board. You never know how a season is going to shake out. We have good receivers but what if two were to go down? It's happened you know. Ted drafted Bakhtiari and no one hardly ever heard of him and look what happened there? A couple of injuries at the T position and the kid is all of a sudden the guy. No one saw that coming but Ted had him the best player on the board so there you go.

Good players find the field.
Decent players give you something. Maybe something better than you had.
I'm not for getting a player because he's better than what we have over picking a really good football player.

Let's say Ted DID do this and selected an ILB that was rated well below say Melvin Gordon. They get ok results from this LB while Gordon is ripping the league up for another team....and then Lacey goes down. Who should of Ted picked now? More important question would be is the team better?

I don't see this draft as one you can play around with and go after a certain position with a certain pick and certainly not there at the end of round one. Get a good player and move on from that.

I understand it's impossible for any team to actually do, but if the best player available was selected at every pick always, that team would very likely always be good. That's why I enjoy going back and reading evaluations of past drafts and seeing who the Packers picked and who the authors deemed was the best player available on the board with that pick in retrospect. It's very interesting, but it's incredibly difficult to know which player is truly the best in the present, but one has to trust their scouting and evaluations.

In Green Bay, the draft is actually as much about now as it is later.

Give me DeVante Parker from Louisville in Round 1... Melvin Gordon, Todd Gurley, Maxx Williams in a trade down, etc... don't draft the next best guy on your board at CB or LB or DL. WR is a need in my view. Cobb or Jordy goes down and we're really hurting. Same thing with Eddie Lacy. It would be nice to have a legit TE prospect for the first time in a long time.

Why do I fear a monumental reach on a defensive player coming? We'll get some guy like Rowe from Utah at CB. That would be a Ted Thompson special right there.

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."

If there is a run of say 5 WR's and Gurley and Gordon go then that would be the best case scenario for all the WE GOTTA get an ILB, CB, or DL advocates. If there is a run of 3 or 4 CB's, and I do see that in many projections, then there will probably be a Gordon, Gurley, or, really good receiver there.

I wouldn't mind seeing Ted Thompson get Kendricks in the 1st and Darby in the 2nd. Talk about adding team speed. Kendricks and Clay flying around and Shields/Darby probably the fastest CB combo in the league. Like they say you can't teach speed. I like Darby too because he can play outside allowing Hyde and Haward to stay inside where I think they are at their best. Easier said then done though. Ted Thompson would probably have to move up in the 2nd to have a shot at Darby.

I've also heard Ted Thompson likes McKinney so if Ted were able to slip back into the 2nd round I wouldn't at all be surprised to hear that name. Probably way off from whatever Ted Thompson is thinking but I have gotten it right guessing on Raji, Bulaga, and Dix so you never know.
