Vikings played their most dominant football from 1961-81 outdoors at Metropolitan Stadium

Contrary to popular belief, the original frozen tundra of NFL Films lore was not Lambeau Field during the Ice Bowl.

The term instead dates to the Minnesota Vikings' highlight film from the 1969 season, when NFL Films narrator — Pat Summerall, not John Facenda — described the Minnesota Vikings' Metropolitan Stadium as the frozen tundra for the 1969 NFL championship game against the Cleveland Browns.

Ah, those were the good old days for the Vikings faithful.
Bud Grant, Fran Tarkenton, the purple people eaters, real tough football.

Now the "purple people eaters have turned into the purple puss......well you get the idea.

I lived in Minneapolis back in 65. I don't remember much about the Vikings because I was in first grade but I remember going past the old Met Stadium all the time. It looked imposing to me. I also remember it was a cold and snowy winter.

I have never cared for arena football even the NFL version. Play outside or move to LA or Jacksonville or someplace like that.

That was a nice and educational article for a young pup such as myself.

No John Facenda did not originally say "frozen Tundra" to describe Lambeau Field during the ice bowl but it was written and intended to be used by John Facenda to describe Lambeau Field during the ice bowl and it was first used in film to describe Lambeau Field during the ice bowl. Its first use was not by Pat Summerall to describe met stadium.

Sabol on "the Frozen Tundra"

Lambeau Field was always the Frozen Tundra and always will be the Frozen Tundra

On the other hand it would not surprise me at all if someone else had uttered the words to describe Lambeau Field or even some other stadium long before Sabol wrote them.

Now days it seems you can spot the stadiums from miles away.

I also remember driving by the year after they tore it down and in a similar sense being in awe of this now huge empty space where this massive building once stood. I was from farm country and was used to wide open spaces but not one surrounded by a community like this was.
