Sad.

Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson has been indicted by a Montgomery County, Texas, grand jury on charges of reckless or negligent injury to a child and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. The team deactivated him for Sunday's home game against the Patriots.

Adrian Peterson's attorney said Friday that Peterson used the same kind of discipline with his child that he experienced growing up in east Texas.
Peterson's attorney, Rusty Hardin, told ESPN.com in a text that Peterson "certainly will" surrender to authorities.

Hardin issued a statement Friday saying his client's conduct "involves using a switch to spank his son." According to a report by Sports Radio 610 in Houston, Peterson removed the leaves of a tree branch, which he referred to in a police report as "a switch," to strike the child.

"This indictment follows Adrian's full cooperation with authorities who have been looking into this matter. Adrian is a loving father who used his judgment as a parent to discipline his son," Hardin said in his statement. "He used the same kind of discipline with his child that he experienced as a child growing up in east Texas. Adrian has never hidden from what happened."

He's a child abuser. Fire him & ban him for life. Idiot had the world by the balls, grabs a tree branch, & beats the hell out of a 4 year old. Game over!!!!

My wife would spake with a brush or something but I would only use my hand. I wanted to feel how hard I was swatting. If it hurt my hand I eased up. You can't do that with a switch.

This is an impossible thing to discuss because the anti-spanking crowd thinks that any discipline of a child that involves hitting is pure child abuse and nothing else. A mother swats her kid once on the behind for misbehaving in a store and right away these people say "she beat her kid. If you support this then you support beating kids" Its all or nothing with so many of them. At least those who post opinions on the matter. Most sane people do not support beating kids or child abuse. However, not all sane people equate a spanking with beating kids or child abuse. It is a case of trying to impose your morality onto someone else.

Most of the spanking crowd realizes that there is a difference between discipline and beating. Personally I do not think a swat or two on the behind is inappropriate for certain repetitive bad behavior. I also think what AP did crossed the line, in fact I think it went way over the line. Not because he used a switch but because of the number of hits he made. IMO it was excessive. I think many of the "spanking is OK" crowd would consider this excessive as well. I would not call it child abuse however. I do not think this makes AP a bad father but I do think that if a 4 year old kid is afraid his father will punch him that is not a healthy relationship.

In a perfect world we would not have to spank our children. Then again in a perfect world our children wouldn't do anything that would require such discipline. I do think that most, in fact perhaps the vast majority of children, can be properly disciplined without spanking. I also think that spanking should never be the first form of discipline. I also think that discipline is much to lax nowadays. There is the conundrum. How do you properly discipline a problem child without resorting to violence. Not every passive form of punishment works on every kid. Timeouts work wonders with some kids others do not respond as well. Ideally children, all people actually, should exhibit good behavior because bad behavior is wrong not because they fear the punishment of the bad behavior. The trick is how do we get them to realize the behavior is wrong.

The NFL is on the hot seat with this one. I think AP will get the full brunt of the new policy (6 games at least) simply because of the timing of it. There is simply no way they can justify anything less in light of the way Goodell handled the Ray Rice case. Even if a lot of people think AP was just disciplining his own child.

Spanking is good, in my opinion. Let's face it, some kids NEED that kind of discipline in order to learn that there are consequences to their actions.
You misbehave, you might get spanked.
Just look around you.......almost every time I go to a store, there is some unruly kid screaming or throwing some kind of tantrum. While mom or dad try to "reason" with them, or threaten a "timeout". Yes, some kids can be reasoned with, and don't need a spanking. But I can't even count how many times kids just rule their parents today. If I acted up like these brats, my parents would have taken me out of the store, swatted my behind, and told me that if I did that again I wouldn't be taken to anymore stores.
And you know what? IT WORKED!
I learned to respect authority, to know that if I did something bad, there would be consequences that I would have to pay.
And as I said before, I didn't get NEARLY as many spankings as I should have received.
And I NEVER was beaten. NEVER abused.

There is a HUGE difference between the two.
Looks like Peterson didn't learn that.
Now HE will face the consequences of his actions.
