Examining the Green Bay Packers' roster:

Quarterbacks (3)
• Aaron Rodgers
  • Matt Flynn
  • Scott Tolzien
• If the Packers are leaning toward keeping only two quarterbacks, then Matt Flynn likely will be their guy. Although he has a lower ceiling than Tolzien, he's been the more consistent performer so far in training camp. The Packers have not kept three quarterbacks on their opening-day roster since 2008, but they might be inclined to do so this season in order to avoid a situation like last year, when Rodgers broke his collarbone.

Interesting 53 he has there. On offense I can see what he's coming from... but only 5 on the DL? ... yes I know Peppers and Neal might be rotating in as well... but going that light on the number of guys that are inside DL size seems like a bad idea unless we're going back to a 4-3 defense.

I forgot which years but there was 2 or 3 mostly between 2005 and 2010 where the defense looked pretty good, but one or two of the DL got banged or up hurt... and the defense was completely done for... because they no longer had depth there and lack a DL rotation... they had some talented DL left, but by the 4th quarter they were tired, winded and were getting pushed around.

If they go to a 5 man DL, then Neal and Peppers better be able to play at inside 3-4 DE... which Neal has done before but never when he was this light (I heard someone suggest he might be 265 lbs now) and one of the writers on twitter said he got swallowed up by an UDFA OG on one play... NFL starting OL might have their way with him if he's playing inside DL at such a light weight. (of course it's possible he could still play there as well... but unless they're 100% sure he can do it... it sounds like a big risk to me going to light there).

Also I'm under the general idea that makes it as a STer. Maybe try to sneak CB Goodson (who I haven't heard much about, good or bad) to the practice squad?

I wonder what are the chances of RB Rajion Neal making it over a 3rd QB, Kuhn or 9th OL.

With Barclay and Taylor the Packers have four OGs... it's too bad none of them can back-up Center and save a spot. Of course they might keep Linsley anyways to develop. But that's a lot of OGs/C ...

Everyone loves Kuhn as a player, including A.R. and I know he had the Peppers block, but he still seems slow, nonathletic, and hard for me to believe some of the other young guys wouldn't be a physical upgrade.

At LB, Demovsky mentioned Thomas...never heard of him to be honest and was hoping for Hubbard just because I was so intrigued by his numbers, but maybe he's someone the Packers could effectively stash on the practice squad.

Packers have DEs Carlos Gray and Luther Robinson and DT Mike Pennel... I read one of the DEs was getting 2nd string snaps with Boyd in the nickel defense (which surprised me; I think it was Gray but I'm not sure), but maybe they were just giving the vets a break? Also read Pennel does a very good job of keeping his pads low for his size. But the Packers might be able to throw them on the practice squad?

Also I remember when questioned who was the back-up to the back-up with Rodgers down and Cobb (I think) out, some reporter came on and said the Packers said Kuhn was the next QB up... and when later asked to explain why Kuhn... (or say Nelson), someone answered Kuhn probably knows the complete offense better than all the non-QBs.

( Thinking to myself: ... Yes but how is throwing abilities? ) I thought Nelson would be the next up... but they say Kuhn would be...

And who knows... the 4th RB, might be able to play STs also... and Packers have had a bigger recent history of RB injured than QBs injured... so maybe 4th RB over 3rd QB?

Also I'm a bit disappointed I haven't heard more from Barrington... I thought he'd make a good jump and I haven't heard much of him.

I agree that it is an educated toss up between Palmer and Mulumba outside. I can see a scenario where neither makes the team. I still have hopes for Barrington because I believe the guy has playmaker potential. I hope he shows up when the pre-season games are underway. We have three practices open to the public this week. I will be focusing on hearing what news comes from practice with respect to Barrington.

Is Demovsky "Packer people"? Or is he just a national media hack? I've seen roster projections by just regular people that seem more believable.

I don't think we will keep Taylor as a 9th O-Lineman given the overlapping positions of several players and the fact that it just wouldn't be that difficult to replace him from the scrap heap.

I really think we will keep 6 WRs - he didn't even mention Dorsey who seems to me to be the most likely 5th best, followed by White. Similarly, with TEs, I expect them to find a way to keep 5.

When you do a 53 man roster you have to make guesses... and everyone is going to guess differently.

Most teams normally keep 9 OL... and Packers might like Taylor more than you (or me)... as he's getting limited reps with the #1 unit... which is more than Sherrod can say (I think). Why they're doing that, I can't say, but maybe they plan on resting Sitton some during the preseason and see Taylor against the other teams starters? The thing I have against Taylor is that as far as I know, he's their 4th best OG and doesn't back-up C or OT. Not that versatile... Barclay being so versatile might give him a chance though if the keep 9 (assuming Sherrod gets in as the back-up/starter at LT).

You're expecting the Packers to keep 11 receivers? Which positions are you going to go thin at? You're 53 man roster might be interesting...

I thought it was going to be a lock with 6 WRs as well, but they have been getting hurt... Abbrederis out... Janis has been ill... I've heard Harper has been VERY inconsistent... I've really like Dorsey and glad I'm not the only one that thinks he could make it. I haven't heard a thing about White this preseason.

I expect 4 TEs though... Quarless, Bostick and Rodgers... and then the rest competing for one spot with Ryan Taylor having the early edge because of ST work and coaches know (like Kuhn) they can normally count on him not to make mistakes.
