Very well put. A good example of this was the Rams win over the Bucs to go to the Supr Bowl. #1 D vs #1 O. #1 O by a nose.

thats a great example. i would love to have a great defense, and its proven to win games and championships. but if you had to pick just one, I would pick being the aggressor rather than reading and reacting.

"Packnic" wrote:

What people forget though, is St Louis had a really good defense that year too. The Bucs allowed 235 points that year(3rd in the NFL), and the Rams allowed 242(4th in the NFL).

That goes back to my point about balance. One dimensional football teams don't win titles.

That is the crux of the question.. balance is the key.. but you learn something about your fellow posters on which they choose.. not to mention great discussion along the way.

Dang. Packnic beat me to it.

I'd take Offense. That Defense wins championships is a sorry overused cliche that I'm frankly getting tired of hearing.

If you look at the GREAT teams, the ones who win SB after SB, they have a balanced team, and a high flying O. It's all about balance, folks. We had the #1 O and the #1 D and the hottest ST player in the NFL the year we won it all.

Steelers in the 70s win 4 SBs. OK, quick, name some Steelers. Off the top of my head, Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Mean Joe Greene, Rocky Blier, Franco Harris.

49ers of the 80s win 4 SBs. OK, quick, name some Niners.

And so on. I'm not going further with this, but I'm sure you get my point. Balanced teams, led by an O that pounds and pounds. The WCO revolutionized the game by pounding with a short yardage attack instead of a running down your opponent's throat. But the idea is the same. Pound them into the ground and score more points than you allow.

Defense!
There is nothing better than stuffing the hole.
If they can't score they can't win, if there is an exception to that, I don't know about it.

Well as long as you don't take the "balance" approach for Packnic, Zombie or Wiskey..

Not that there is anything wrong with that either..

Back on point though.. which unit dictates a champion? How many great offenses have won a championship on said great offensive play? I haven't look it up.. but I would be willing to bet that not many average defenses have won the championship.. if any. I be willing to bet that everyone was in the top 1/3 of the league.

If you keep the opposing offense off the field because of a great defense.. you are going to eventually win the battle of time of possession in which you can continue hammering the ball in the running game.. eventually you are going to wear them down.

The Raven are a prime example.. they didn't have a good offense.. they just had the ball so much that they wore the opposing defense down and appeared to have a great rushing attack.

Look to the west.. great running team the Vikes have.. but because their secondary and passing defense is inconsistent.. they aren't winning a whole lot.

Defense.. Defense... Defense.

Pack - I'll look it up.

The thing is, the dominant Ds only win one SB then disappear off the face of the earth. Dominant Os are dynasties. I'd rather be dynasty.

I'd have to disagree on the Ravens' offense. Jamal Lewis was in his prime, and once they added Dilfer they found a QB who could manage the game without turning it over. They weren't dominant, but the running game in particular was pretty good. Defense will keep you in the game, but you need offense to win the game. Just in the Super Bowl era, the Packers of the 60s, Steelers and Dolphins of the 70s, 49ers of the 80s, Cowboys and Packers of the 90s, and Patriots of the 00s had talent on both sides of the ball. Even when we think about the great championship defensive teams like the 85 Bears there's a Walter Payton on the other side of the ball providing some offensive punch.
