"Understated Jennings puts substance over flash

By the third time Greg Jennings had pointed into the stands and was warned by officials that he was about to get flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, Western Michigan coach Bill Cubit started thinking.

Was his star senior turning into a diva receiver? Was he pointing to family member or maybe a young lady he was trying to impress as he scored three touchdowns that fall day in 2005? What kind of showy silliness was going on here?

So I asked him, and he said he was pointing to my son, said Cubit, recalling the conversation with the current Green Bay Packers wideout.

The week before, Ryan Cubits senior season as Western Michigans quarterback had ended when he suffered a broken leg against Temple. Ryan Cubit, Jennings roommate on the road, was prohibited from standing on the sideline after having surgery to have a rod inserted in his leg. So instead of sharing the moments on the field, Jennings had to show his buddy some love in a different way, even if it meant skirting the college celebration rules.

Im sitting up there in tears half the game as Greg and (former teammate and current Broncos tight end) Tony (Scheffler) are doing that, said Ryan Cubit, who was later granted a sixth year of eligibility. Here are these two great players who we all know are going to play in the NFL, and theyre showing me how much they appreciated me as a teammate.

That will definitely change your thinking about someone, Bill Cubit said.

In an era of diva receivers, Jennings is high on substance with very little flash.

The most productive wide receiver in the NFL today doesnt go by his initials, throw tantrums at the drop of a pass or wear outfits featuring bright sweaters and bow ties. He also hasnt changed his name for marketing purposes, and he doesnt appear likely to punch out one of his teammates anytime soon, let alone two of them.

Jennings is about as unassuming as you can get. To most people, he doesnt even look like hes running hard. Even so, the third-year receiver is lighting up the NFL as if he were some morph of Terrell Owens, Chad Ocho whatever and Steve Smith.

Jennings leads the NFL with 653 yards on 34 catches through six games. Hes on pace for more than 1,700 yards. Moreover, Jennings is doing that as a pure deep threat, not the elaborate catch-a-bunch-of-short-passes receivers that are en vogue around the NFL these days.

Jennings 19.2 yards per catch this season is only exceeded by two receivers with 20 or more grabs: San Diegos Vincent Jackson and Minnesotas Bernard Berrian, with both averaging 19.8 yards a grab. Beyond that, Jennings has 12 catches of 20 yards or more this season, including five of 40 or more.

I try to be a perfectionist when it comes to route running, thats how I was taught in college, said Jennings, who credited former Western Michigan receivers coach George McDonald with helping him perfect his craft. You want to be smooth and fast in and out of your cuts, make sure the cornerback doesnt know whats coming. Theres nothing like being able to fool the cornerback with a great route, get behind him and make a big catch.

It can be game-changing, as it was Sunday at Seattle. Locked in a 10-10 tie in the third quarter, Green Bay was looking for a way to get control of the game. On a third-and-6, the Packers called for a double-go route for both Jennings and fellow wide receiver Donald Driver.

Jennings was matched up with Seattle Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Trufant, who had done a good job of keeping Jennings in front of him until that point. Jennings gave him just enough of an outside fake to get Trufant turned around and then jetted up field as Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers laid the deep pass perfectly in stride to Jennings for a 45-yard go-ahead touchdown.

To prove this is not simply about speed, Jennings used the next drive to show off his other skills. He worked the sideline for an eight-yard catch on third-and-6 and then caught a 14-yarder on second-and-10 two plays later as the Packers drove for another touchdown. He finished with five catches for 84 yards.

Afterward, dressed in long jean shorts, a t-shirt, windbreaker and tennis shoes, Jennings was about as look-at-me loud as someone who sits in the balcony at church. If any part of him wanted attention, it was well under control a testimony to his humble upbringing by two evangelist parents. Greg Sr. and Gwen raised him in church to respect God for all he was given, including the chance to stay home instead of go off to Michigan. Jennings had hoped to play for the Wolverines before being told they had run out of scholarships.

I dont know why it was, but at one point I felt God was telling me that he needed to stay home, Gwen Jennings said. He didnt know that, but I prayed for that. My oldest daughter, who was at Michigan at the time, was upset with me because she really wanted him to go to Michigan. She kept saying, Nobody is going to see him, hes not going to make it.

I thought to myself, if hes really good enough, the teams will find him. They go everywhere to find players, even the North Pole so if God means it to be for him to make it, hell get there and he has I dont know why it was. Its not like we ever had some great, traumatic event in our lives about why he needed to stay.

Well, maybe not for the Jennings family, but the Cubits certainly benefited. During Jennings senior year, he and Ryan Cubits came up with a critical play in the fourth quarter to beat Southern Illinois, a play and game that vaulted Western Michigan to seven wins over an eight-game stretch and the schools first winning record in five years.

When you have guys who work so hard for you and give so much of themselves, it makes it so much easier to coach, said Bill Cubits, who took over at the beginning of 2005 and now has the team off to a 6-1 start this season. Guys like that set a tone for what youre trying to do with your program its a lot more than just about talent.

It runs much deeper, so to speak. "

The funny thing is, Jennings once again did the pointing thing this season. When did this happen? During the Cowboys game a few weeks back, Rodgers stepped up, dodged a sack and threw the ball gliding through the air with an arm on his leg, obtaining a first down through sheer willpower. When Jennings caught it, you could see the respect he had for Rodgers at that moment.

But enough about Rodgers. Jennings is an absolute beast, and I sure hope to hell he gets rewarded for his contributions to this team. He's young and he's good. He's got Donald Driver, another humble but excellent WR to lend him notes on how to get it done. What a receiving corps we have!

Beat me to posting it! Great article, I like having humble players on our roster. I think it makes for a better locker room and overall better team chemistry.

So does this mean that if Jennings overachieves that he can be another definition of "substance abuse"?

beast (10h) : I was kind of hoping Douglas might come back to the Pack
beast (10h) : My question is how much do we trust Jenkins? In bad weather, he seemed to struggle a bit with ball control snapping, though he started at OG
beast (10h) : Well Jenkins probably knows he's not getting that 2026 salary number without a new contact... so just trying to get the new contact early
Zero2Cool (15h) : CB Rasul Douglas is visiting the #Seahawks today, per source.
dfosterf (18h) : He's a switch and baiter. Its the same as a bait and switcher except he agreed to the switch first lol
dfosterf (18h) : 6.8 mil raise next year. Those are existing contract numbers
dfosterf (18h) : 12.8 plus 4.8 pro rata signing bonus is 17.6 mil. Top center in the league at 18
Zero2Cool (19h) : Elgton Jenkins wants to rework contract ahead of position change to center

dfosterf (12-May) : Canuck Cannon. Got a very good feeling about this
Zero2Cool (12-May) : Tom Pelissero also reports what bboy stated
bboystyle (12-May) : The Green Bay Packers on Monday signed Taylor Elgersma, the Canadian-born quarterback who tried out at the team’s rookie camp last weekend
beast (12-May) : There were reports four days ago that the Packers were signing QB Taylor Elgersma, but no official action since
Zero2Cool (12-May) : And for Ian Rapoport to announce Saints send 1st and 2nd rounder to Packers for Malik Willis.
dfosterf (12-May) : *Elgersma*
dfosterf (12-May) : Today would be a good day to discover the Pack signed Taylor Engersma, the Canadian QB
Zero2Cool (11-May) : It wasn't. He simply wanted his money back. They refused. Cops came. They gave him his money in end.
dfosterf (11-May) : Fortunately it doesn't sound like a big deal
Zero2Cool (10-May) : Elgton Jenkins Involved In Strip Club Dispute ... Cops Called To Mitigate
Zero2Cool (10-May) : Derek Carr retires. Shoulder must be bad.
Zero2Cool (10-May) : Packers Pro Shop is not currently printing Golden #22 jerseys “until his number is confirmed after Training Camp.”

dfosterf (8-May) : I never thought I'd live long enough to call a pope a FIB, but here we are
Martha Careful (8-May) : Chicago produces a pope before it produces a 4000 yard passing quarterback
wpr (8-May) : HAHAHA Mucky Comment of the day.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : According to reports, Mel Kiper is furious that Sanders wasn't selected as the new Pope
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Time taken to get picked:
Zero2Cool (8-May) : New Pope: 2 days | Shedeur Sanders: 3 days
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Collin Whitchurch @cowhitchurch · 1h Chicago got a pope before it got a QB to throw for 4,000 yards in a season.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : New Pope from Chicago; in other words, the city produced a Pope before a 4000 yard passer
beast (7-May) : My first name starts with R and my beer belly is quite voluptuous! Thank you for noticing 😏
Zero2Cool (7-May) : beast, you're just one R from being voluptuous.
Zero2Cool (7-May) : And now some Packers blogger is like Doubs to Steelers makes sense!!!!
Zero2Cool (7-May) : You saw me Tweet???
beast (7-May) : Supposedly Steelers will be trading WR George Pickens to the Cowboys for a 3rd and late round pick swap
Zero2Cool (5-May) : Ravens release Justin Tucker, err D. Watson Jr?
Zero2Cool (5-May) : Cardinals have signed TE Josiah Deguara.
Zero2Cool (5-May) : If I were to "Google" it, then I wouldn't read it in your words.
Martha Careful (5-May) : Yes, in the military S2’s work on IPB, PERCEC, PHYSEC and IO
dfosterf (4-May) : FYI civilian companies swipe the S2 designation from the military. S2 is the intelligence branch up to brigade level. G2 is division level.
dfosterf (4-May) : Google it. Make sure to tack NFL on it or you will get the military meaning
Zero2Cool (4-May) : S2?
beast (4-May) : Seems like the S2 has a love/hate relationship with professional scouts.
beast (4-May) : In theory, the S2 test how quickly a QBs brain can solve game like issues and how quickly they can do it.
dfosterf (4-May) : Are you gentlemen and at least one lady familiar with the S2 cognition
