Well, we all know you would trade down until you had 20 players drafted, and they you'd have to cut half of them...

Seriously, though, I wouldn't trade down as much as "the game" suggests is possible. Trading partners is key, but if the QB cards fall the right way and if Ted Thompson were willing to let others compete for Mosely/Pryor/Shazier if they fall, I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility for Ted Thompson to trade down 2-3 times and pick up 2-3 extra picks in the the top 100. Might take some combo from the 4th, 5th non-comp/6th/7th picks to swing those 2-3 trade-downs, but I'd be okay if that made possible a combo of, say:
Bucannon/Attaochu/Van Noy/Richburg/Shade Tree/Niklas/J.Matthews
or
Marqise Lee/Bucannon/Van Noy/C. Jones/D. Jones/Sefarian-Jenkins/Mewhort.

Add Berhe, Dri Archer, and maybe Ryan Carretthers or Ross Cockrell or Colt Lyerla later somehow and 9-10 picks would be just fine with me.

My pessimistic guess is that Cleveland/Houston/Minnesota and other loser teams will screw it up, and Ted won't find a trading partner. And so he'll end up going BPA for one of the usual suspects of the mocks (Pryor/Mosley/Nix/Shazier). And so be it then. But I don't like the idea of going after two firsts.

I just don't think the cost is worth it at all.

In some other thread, talking about the Aaron Rodgers pick, Ted Thompson was quoted as saying we had 20 people with first round grades and Rodgers was the last one left. Who knows if that was true or not. But I don't think this draft has 20.

But it does have an abundance of 33-100-level players. I'd rather have them pick more of the latter than one extra 20-40 level players.

This draft is deep...deep at positions we really aren't in need of (depending on what you think we need).

I'm all for trading up if the right players are there, but not for a scenario in taking both Shazier and Mosley. It would be nice if the Packers can take a safety (let's say HaHa or Pryor fall) at 21 and if Shazier and/or Mosley are still on the board late in the 1st (even better would be if they were still available early in the 2nd but that doesn't fit the thread topic).

Quality over quantity in this draft, imo. The deepness of this draft class doesn't fit the needs at the Packers positions to need more picks in the later rounds.

What is being considered deep talent positions this draft? Wide receiver and cornerbacks? I'd say the drop off in talent is pretty significant for the other positions other than those two.

To me, I divide in terms of:
1. True first round value. To my mind, it'll take "falling unexpectedly" to get one of these at #21.
2. Top 100-120 picks.
3. Rest of draft.

When I say "deep", I'm looking at level #2, and I mean "more than usually seen in this tier at a given position". And I consider the draft deep at:
1. WR
2. CB
3. DT/3-4 DE.
4. OLB.
5. OT
6. OG/C

WR -- a need, for another #3/#4 at least. Love to have another level 2 here, even on the days I'm really optimistic about Boykins.
CB -- always value here for more good CBs.
DL -- IMO major need. We have Daniels, unproven potential, and guys. I lack confidence in Raji, I don't care what MM says in the offseason. Even assume Datone Jones takes off, we still need more.
OLB -- need unless you think Peppers plays four years. And there are some really good ones that are going to be available in that second tier.
OT/OG/C -- I know most are satisfied here. I'm not. Not even close. And even if you are looking depth only here, this is a great draft for OL depth in my opinion.

If I were as sold as everyone seems to be with Mosley and Shazier, I'd probably feel different. But I think one is too big of an injury concern and I still think Shazier is overrated. I like both Pryor and Bucannon, but one will be well gone by #21 and isn't good enough to trade up for, and the other is top 100, not first round.
3-4 DE.

What are the Packers greatest needs?
1. Safety. Clinton-Dix and Pryor are the only real #1 talents. BOth will be gone. Top 100 is pretty thin, too, but the right trade down should get either Ward or Bucannon or Reynolds and won't be needed to get Dontae Johnson or one of the corner-convert-to-safeties like Breeland.
2. ILB. Mosley will probably be available. Shazier almost certainly will. Most Packers fans would be okay here. This is where I think the debate about trading down lies. Most Packer fans would be okay with either. I'm in the (fairly small) minority that says getting a couple more top 100 picks is worth the risk of missing not just one, but both.
3. Pass rush. What quality is going to be available at 21 that isn't going to be available early second, mid-second, or even third? You've got Attaochu, Bradford, Tuitt, Ealy, Crichton, Martin, DuQuan Jones, Lawrence, Sutton, Jeffcoat, Ford, Marcus Smith, Van Noy. Which of these, or others possibly available at #21 are that much better?
4. WR. Really deep. Really really deep. But which of those available at 21 won't be available five or ten or a round later? And of those who are, which are enough better to call them "first round" rather than top 100? Everyone can name one (my favorite is Marqise Lee), but can people name three true first round quality WR that will almost certainly not be available if not picked at 21?

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
