A look at the Packers' 2015 cap situation

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- We've noted several times that the Green Bay Packers still have plenty of unused space on their 2014 salary cap.

As of the start of this week, they have $15,636,891 in salary-cap space. Only six NFL teams have more, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

The outlook for 2015 is not quite as good.

While much can — and will — change between now and the start of the 2015 league year next March, the Packers are looking at a much different salary-cap situation next year.

I don't really see this as much of a problem. They have like 117m on the books for 2015 with quite a few core players or projected starters on the books. With a 130ish + any rolled over money cap that leaves plenty of cash to work with still without worrying about going over. On top of that there aren't any "bad" contracts really that I can see, bad meaning overpaid players with large dead money hits were they to be released.

Rather than trying to roll the cap space we have yet this year over into next. Use it this year and get Cobb and Nelson done this year. Kill off more of their contracts this year so the remainder of their contracts are more team friendly in the future. Waiting normally results in higher cost because of new contracts pushing salaries higher.
