TT didn't sit guys like Daniels and Boyd on the bench when they were looking like 2 of the better DL while Raji played the most snaps looking like one of the worst linemen in the league. He didn't keep Hyde on the bench for long stretches of the season and he didn't refuse to keep MD Jennings off the field for Richardson or Banjo despite benching the guy 4 or 5 times throughout the season for playing like ass. Ted Thompson didn't make Brad Jones play while he was banged up and playing like crap when Lattimore had done much better in relief. Why did Dom do these things? Because the guys he went with were "better fits for his scheme" not necessarily the better players.

Oh, yeah, and a new S & C staff.

BTW, kind of odd that here it is, 3 years down the line, with many of the exact same problems, and we are only now learning Capers hates playing rookies, deferring to veteran players. And, we have so few truly veteran players at those positions… just because they are "veteran" doesn't mean they are "good," or the "best options."

Well, good for you. All I know for sure is that when I had the gall to criticize the genius GM, I ran into a veritable shitstorm from a bunch of "in denial" defenders of him - and I could be wrong, but it seems like you were one of that bunch.

Makes me wonder how good this Tretter kid is.

But, you were talking about firing him, which to me seems ridiculous.

If anyone should be fired, it should be Capers and Lovat. We've been one of the worst defenses for 3 years now, and one of the most injured teams for the last 6. Mike McCarthy might be a bit too loyal with his own guys, which is understandable to some point, but I think staff changes should be made if we are to get truly better in these areas. I can see where Capers has been playing with somewhat of a bare cupboard, but he should have voiced that, not allowed that, being DC. Also, we have too many players not developing in his system, but rather regressing. Not a good sign, on any team.

The only players on D who improved over last year are Daniels, Shields, Hawk and Williams.

Can't you see, that's EXACTLY what Capers does - avoiding going head to head, scheming/misdirecting/compensating as much as possible - BECAUSE of the players he has - or more accurately, lacks - quality-wise.

And who exactly is to blame for that?

What kind of defense do you think would succeed with personnel like the Packers have, anyway?

I'm thinking this Nickel package is pretty damn good with the biggest weak spots being both the Safeties.

DL - Jolly, Daniels (rotate Datone Jones and Worthy)
LB - Perry, Hawk, Lattimore, Matthews
CB - Shields, Williams, Hayward
SS - Burnett, Richardson

I think the Packers need two starting Safeties. I do like Richardson, but I am not sold he is the answer. I do not think Burnett is worth his contract.

Packers do need to draft better, especially if they are going to live and die by the draft and develop philosophy. Keep in mind, Thompson believes that you can plug in defensive players from other teams far more effectively than on offense. He said offensive players have to be groomed. Coincidentally, the offense performs quite well (between the 20's anyhow lol)

That's one angle about Capers where he may be culpable - setting the lineup for base and other groups. If that "nickel" lineup you mention was the base - sit Raji and Pickett down permanently, we would be a helluva a lot better off. Maybe Capers was to blame for starting those two lard asses over Daniels and Jolly, and ditto that for B. Jones starting over Lattimore. However, you could also say Capers had to play with the hand Ted dealt to him. And Richardson at Safety? Come on! Haven't you seen the guy be out of position and beaten in coverage virtually all the time? And for being such a highly touted hitter, he sure seems to miss a lot of tackles too. Him or Jennings - after having his fill of McMillian - hmmm, Ted sure gave Dom a great choice there, didn't he?
