I'm sure Thompson received at least some feedback from the coaches that they could develop one of those guys into a decent backup. After all, they rolled with Harrell for an entire season anyway. Unless any of you definitively know different, I'm sure the coaches deserve some blame for not being more candid to Thompson that the options they were presented with just weren't going to cut it. For all we know, McCarthy could have repeatedly informed Thompson that Harrell or Coleman was all he needed.
Ultimately, whatever decisions were made weren't the best, but it happens. Can't always expect a backup to come in and throw 6 TDs and light up the score board. That's more an exception than the norm, and shouldn't always be used to evaluate a situation.
