GREEN BAY — Mike McCarthy has been coaching quarterbacks for a long time, and he's been the Green Bay Packers head coach for going on eight years.

But he doesn't have the faintest idea how the Vince Young experiment is going to work out, even after Young looked OK during Friday night's preseason-opening loss to the Arizona Cardinals at Lambeau Field.

"I don't know if I've been through one like this, where you bring in a guy this late," McCarthy said of Young, whom the Packers worked on Aug. 5 and signed the next day. "I've been part of situations where you sign a veteran quarterback at the last cut, but I've never brought one in three days before the first preseason game."

For a guy with limited exposure to the team's playbook and only three practices with his new team under his belt, Young acquitted himself well. Entering the game after backup Graham Harrell and playing two series, he completed 1 of 3 passes — a 7-yard completion to Alex Gillett to convert a third-and-7 — and also ran twice for 12 yards, including a 5-yard scramble on third-and-2 to pick up another first down.

Quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo said in advance of the game that Young would have to learn the offense differently than his quarterback counterparts because he missed the first seven installations of the offensive playbook.

"The other guys have had the benefit of getting the installations three times. The hard part is, he's not going to get them. He's going to get them by game plan," McAdoo explained. "So you're going to have to teach everything by game plan. I will say this: When he showed up, he was ready to work and he was excited to work. I think a lot of the guy in the short time he's been here, he's approached it the right way, he's fitting in in the room and he's working to take our terminology and put it into what he knew in the past and merge them so he has something to sink his teeth into and then go out and perform.

"He's also trying to digest what we're asking him to do fundamentally, and that's a lot, but he's very capable. Very capable."

What Young will be capable from here remains to be seen, but McCarthy sure sounds encouraged. Look for him to get more work in practice this week and perhaps see more playing time at St. Louis on Saturday night than he had in the opener.

"We were able to spend some time (Friday) morning and iron out a package for him. I thought he did some nice things," McCarthy said. "It was good to just get him out there. I wanted to get him out there. He hasn't played football in a year. Obviously, playing the quarterback position is a little different than playing other positions. I was happy to get him into the game, get him into the flow of the game and definitely get him started. We'll try to do more with him next week."

Why is McCarthy so excited about Young? Despite an up-and-down career, he's won 31 of the 50 games he's started in the NFL and won the 2006 national championship at the University of Texas.

"I'll be honest with you, the thing about Vince Young just from my personal opinion in the evaluation process was, the man's winner. The man's won games. He's won championships," McCarthy said.

"He fits good into our room, but obviously he's at a disadvantage because he hasn't been here. He's got a lot to learn, and Ben McAdoo's doing a great job with him. Them two are spending a lot of extra time. We'll do a much better job of getting him ready to play against St. Louis."

For his part, Young wasn't getting head of himself.

"It's football. It's a game that I love. I'm definitely happy to be back out there playing and definitely happy that Green Bay gave me an opportunity to play with a fantastic team," Young said. "But overall, I'm just happy to be back out there and getting my feet wet."

I dont know much about his personality but I hope he does well.

If we did really well he's be a nice addition to our team until next year where someone pilfers him 😉

Right now Mike is saying all the right things about the 3 guys shooting for Aaron's backup job, but I believe deep down he has realized that Harrell is not the answer and Coleman needs more time.

I bet he is hoping Young can grasp enough of the offense in the next few weeks to be the backup.

Vince shows he can make The Packer team, whether he plays much at all there will be teams fighting over him next year and Ted won't be able to match their offers.

I'm hoping he wins the backup spot and can continue to get his career back on track.

To me, Young looked the best of our backups.
He seemed to at least have an idea of what was going on. He wasn't great, but he looked better then the guys that had been here longer.
He could win the job by default.

I'm not worried about Harrell's arm strength (or lack thereof.) What bothers me is his lack of poise. His mental attitude is that he is a boy among men, and he's too intimidated to go out there and kick some ass. Instead he's stumbling, bumbling and fumbling.

The Packers have cut back on the number of times nine-year veteran Aaron Rodgers is throwing in this training camp and the results have already been positive.

This isn't about Aaron.

This is about getting Young ready.

That's why Im pulling for vince; at least he has some experience and has a big frame; should account for something.

Zero2Cool (46m) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (1h) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (15h) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (15h) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you
wpr (22-Jan) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (22-Jan) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (21-Jan) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Then he'll land with another team and flourish.
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Ben going to Bears. He'll be out in 3 years.
