This isn't knocking Rodgers' skills, but he doesn't have the experience Favre does... The best answer seems to be that McCarthy's system and Favre were a perfect fit.

I think McCarthy's insistence that "all Aaron needs to do now is get playing time" is reflective of the fact that Aaron can only begin to get better in diagnosing and adjusting to what he sees Defences do by going out there and playing.
