The Packers and Aaron Rodgers are a couple million dollars a year apart as they continue discussing a new contract that would keep him in Green Bay into his mid-30s. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the two sides are roughly $2 million a year apart. That might sound like a lot, but when

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the two sides are roughly $2 million a year apart. That might sound like a lot, but when we’re talking about adding another four years and somewhere around $100 million in new money to Rodgers’ deal, a $2 million a year difference is something that the sides can work through.

The Packers would need to go a little beyond $100 million in new money over four additional years if they’re going to pay Rodgers more over the next six seasons than the $120 million deal Joe Flacco signed. Rapoport reports that the Packers are currently offering more than $21 million a year, and that Rodgers will end up with a better deal than Flacco got.

Flacco, of course, got his great deal in large part because he bet on himself, turned the Ravens down last year and proved himself worthy of more money by winning the Super Bowl MVP award. If the Packers don’t add another $2 million a year to their offer, Rodgers may try to do the same.

I'll be very disappointed if the duration is that short. I want to see a "to the end of his career" contract similar to what Favre got - 10 years or so. That same $25 million a year is about right, but it would be a cap killer if the duration is just 4 years, even in the form of an extension. Make it ten years and we have the peace of mind to not need to go through the process again while he is in his prime, and with a ten year deal, the cap hit can be very manageable for the first few years. I'm sure Thompson and Ball know all that, but the media types reporting about it, maybe not so much.

We could trade him.

Can the Green Bay Packers afford to have the highest paid player in the NFL?

I watched "moneyball" for the 4th time last night.

I wonder what we could get for him?

It's gonna be the big number, why wouldn't it?

I cannot help but reflecting upon Dhazer bitchin' about his previous contract.

Many posted that he might sign for a "discount", or a "team friendly" contract...

How quaint! lol

Those were the good times! Our "window", imo----

You might consider forgetting many of the names of players you like on this team if we do this deal, which we will do, imo.

Maybe we should drop a tier at the position...

Dodd, I think it's a given that Thompson is gonna work out a deal that keeps Rodgers and doesn't ruin the cap situation. In a couple different threads, I posted examples of how that could be done. The key is a large bonus and a very long term - ten years or so. Doing the numbers leads only to that conclusion IMO. "Team friendly" only works when it is good for the player too, you got that right, but what I'm talking about certainly is.

If we traded away Aaron Rodgers, I'd go postal. I'm messin' with old posts, and old posters.
