Feeling the sting of an opening day loss in which his unit made too many mistakes to contend with a top-tier team like the San Francisco 49ers, Dom Capers had a choice to make.

The Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator could either stick with the veterans who had won their positions through training camp competition and underperformed against the 49ers, or he could roll the dice with a bunch of rookies.

He had roughly 24 hours to make a decision because the Packers played four days later against the Chicago Bears.

What Capers did is a testament to his ability to be honest with himself.

He very well could have convinced himself to give cornerback Jarrett Bush and safety M.D. Jennings one more chance before making a switch. He could have very well waited another week before crafting significant roles for rookies Casey Hayward, Jerron McMillian, Dezman Moses and Mike Daniels.

But he didn't.

And as a result, the Packers played their best defensive game since holding the Minnesota Vikings to 7 points and 266 yards in Week 10 of last season.

Capers' defense cut the Bears at the knees with seven sacks and four interceptions in a 23-10 victory at Lambeau Field Thursday night.

Six rookies - Hayward, McMillian, Moses, Daniels, Nick Perry and Jerel Worthy - played integral parts in a game the Packers couldn't afford to lose. It takes some guts to make that call.

It's clear that defensive coordinator Dom Capers is going to use a heavy dose of rookies this year to pump his defense. He made the gutsy move of incorporating six of them into his game plan against Chicago and it paid off with seven sacks and four interceptions.

The addition of Jerron McMillian at nickel safety and Casey Hayward as dime cornerback were two of the best moves. Both outperformed the previous starters, veterans Jarrett Bush and M.D. Jennings. McMillian is a better athlete than Jennings and Hayward is more of a natural pass defender than Bush.

The future is looking good for the Pack defense. As these young players get more snaps they will learn and get more confidence.

Thus is why I think 2013 is our year. I'm still not sold on this D. This is a GOOD thing though as I'm looking at a 10-year period (2010-2019) where we win 3 or 4 SBs and establish a dynasty. On a personal note, I'm hoping for that magic number 4 so 🇦🇷 can be compared with Joe.

This is just one of my prejudices, but I don't trust rookies in the post season. You can get away with mental errors in regular season. You can't in the post season.

I was all for it. I liked seeing Walden come in fairly early to spell Perry. We are very effective with him in there. There were one or two big holds on him that weren't called. He helped with our pressure.

I'm hopeful the defense will progress from wk 2 to wk 3 not regress to what they were in wk 1.
I was seriously bummed after wk 1.

McMillian was a guy I was hopeful on early on. Hopefully he continues to progress as the season moves along.

Glad Dom pulled the cord on some vets. Although the Bears offense isn't the 49ers offense, the Packers defense was night and day different with Jarrett Bush off the field. Obviously other moves played into the defenses success as well but Jarrett Bush is just a big suckass.

dfosterf (26-Jun) : I think it would be great to have someone like Tom Grossi or Andy Herman on the Board of Directors so he/they could inform us
dfosterf (26-Jun) : Fair enough, WPR. Thing is, I have been a long time advocate to at least have some inkling of the dynamics within the board.

Martha Careful (25-Jun) : I would have otherwise admirably served
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Also, no more provision for a write-in candidate, so Martha is off the table at least for this year
dfosterf (25-Jun) : You do have to interpret the boring fine print, but all stockholders all see he is on the ballot

dfosterf (25-Jun) : of the folks that run this team. I do not recall Mark Murphy being subject to our vote.
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Ed Policy yay or nay is on the pre-approved ballot that we always approve because we are uninformed and lazy, along with all the rest
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Weird question. Very esoteric. For stockholders. Also lengthy. Sorry. Offseason.
