The downside is that we get some injuries at the position at which he is taking up a roster spot, then come playoff time he tests dirty. Meanwhile Ted's long since released a bunch of guys who might not have been quite as good, but who could have helped us win it all.

But that's a chance you take. The Queens took that chance when they made that blockbuster deal to trade for Jared Allen.

It's no different than a freak injury. It can happen any time. Some guys have more of a history than others, but you can lose a player for many reasons.

I want to go out like my Grandpa did. Peacefully in his sleep.
Not screaming in terror like his passengers.

No I am sorry he just doesn't take a spot ? 😳

You have x number of practices and limited time to get them going and see who goes and who stays.

Do you take snaps away from the guys that will play and are guaranteed to contribute ?

Do we take reps away from Worthy so we can see if maybe JJ still has it ?

Forget about 2009 . Since he left we went 21-2 and won a SB.... Not too darn shabby.

My point is do we really really need to take the risk ? Or do you hunt with the dogs ya got ?

No reason to not have him in for an evaluation. If he looks worthy of joining the roster, I am all for giving him a shot at redemption. Johnny Jolly had a very difficult upbringing. I believe his mother was a severe addict, leaving him genetically predisposed to becoming an addict himself. The guy made his mistakes, no doubt. It would be good to see him turn his life around, and play for the Packers, if the staff thinks he merits the roster spot. That would really be something, as a lot of time has passed since he last played. Definitely a long shot.

Yeah, bring him in if he gets reinstated.

(that's a real question, not sarcasm) I'm thinking if he shows the same talent that made the Packers offer him a contract, then he's worth one of the 90 roster spots, no question. The Packers need big men up front who can push.

The Packers went 10 - 6 in 2010, 4 - 0 in the 2010 playoffs, 15 - 1 in 2011 and 0 - 1 in the 2011 playoffs. That's 29 and 8 since Johnny Jolly left with that little thing called a Super Bowl sprinkled in there, lol. Jolly's last game was in 2009.

Right now, aside from Raji and Pickett, Packers defensive line is terrible. Those two are the core, proven starters. Add in the unproven rookie, Worthy, and they may have their 3 starters. What comes after that?

Neal- Suspended 4 games (still) and a nice history of injuries. Hasn't done anything special.
Hargrove- Suspended 8 games (still). Don't see this being overturned.
Daniels- Unproven rookie. Is a rotational player at best right now. Also undersized for a 3-4 DL.
Guy- Unproven.
Jones- Unproven.
Merling- Don't know too much about him but looking over his career, nothing great. Rotational player at best.
Muir- Doubt he makes the cut. If he does, rotational player at best.
Wilson- We have all seen what he can do, which is close to nothing.
Wynn- We have all seen what he can do, which is close to nothing as well.

Hot garbage.

Why not give a chance to Johnny Jolly, who did work back in the day for the Packers? Its not like he would be taking a roster spot from someone who is an all star. He is a proven 3-4 DL and while he has had a good time off away from the game, a try out isn't going to hurt the team.

If he has a good try out, the Packers pick up a guy that can help tremendously with a very weak part of their game.
If he has a bad try out, the Packers cut ties and nothing is lost other than time.

JOHNNY JOLLY 2012! (I am all for the comebacks)

I get that everyone deserves a second chance, and there are some questionable "Packer People" currently on the team such as Walden, or in the past with Koren Robinson.

However, although I have virtually no personal experience with, and thus little understanding of drug addiction/abuse, I see this as an unnecessary risk to bring on someone who has repeatedly made the same mistake. Can he be trusted to stay clean for an entire season? If there is reasonable doubt, why should the organization even entertain the idea with a "try out?"

We know what happened when that was taken from him, he want back to his old buddies and got into more trouble.

Simple....if he's allowed to return, you give him a chance. If he does excellent on the practice field, you give him a roster spot.
Also, he's used up all of his "get out of jail free" cards. If he screws up ONCE, he's gone PERMANENTLY.
But i see no down side for giving him a chance.

beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
