Very true, Aaron Kampman had established himself as a stud 4 - 3 DE and was in his final year of his contract. I didn't blame him for being uneasy about the change or even upset about it. He spent most of his football career as an End and suddenly in his contract year they want him to play OLB.

I'm hoping Nick Perry turns out to be a stud. I just got a feeling he'll have less impact than the two picks after him.

Kampman was also SLOW compared to Perry. This dude is FAST, and I like it. But as I said in another post, I have a strong feeling he will be groomed to be the primary pass rusher for the Packers with CM3 being a "swing" guy (since he is really good at both pass rushing and coverage). I thought that this is exactly what the Packers needed anyway. I think we have it and I'm excited.

Also, let the guy put his hand on the ground some. I suppose it strongly suggests that he is rushing most of the time, but so what. I'd like to see more hybrid defense between the 3-4 and the 4-3.

Good points all. Agree very much with the idea that an improved pass rush treats a lot of other defensive ills, too.

Though I can't help worrying about whether we will see the rush getting closer a lot, but still have way too many third downs converted when the opposing QB finds a TE wide open against Hawk/Bishop/Peprah/Burnett.

This can neutralize drives as good as a sack. Tight ends will be hard to stop, but they're hard to stop for EVERYONE. Teams are still going to move the ball on us, but hopefully I can at least have a little faith in the defense this season. But overall, we're still going to need to put up a lot of points, and that's OK because we will. The defense just has to bail the offense out occasionally for us to have a serious shot at winning the Super Bowl.

When Perry starts getting sacks, he's gonna love his new position. As for coverage, they'll ease him into that aspect. They'll make it worth his while until he starts developing some confidence there.

This will probably come as a surprise to you, but one does not always HAVE to say something at all. =d>

I know nothing of college players and watch nothing non Badgers in college ball ... I think Nick Perry is going to be the biggest disappointment of the Packers first three picks of the draft.

I've read reports where Nick Perry is happy about the switch as he feels he has a lot of untapped potential and he thinks being OLB will tap said talent. And then I read his quote about being switched to OLB saying something like, its here, can't change it. Almost like he's being forced to do it against his will.

I think it would be in his best interest to shed pounds down to 260.

I blame this feeling I have about Nick Perry on Aaron Kampman-experience. Kampman was a pro's pro (even though I hate that phrase). I think he tried his best to make it work and it just didn't work for him. He was too rigid in the hips to start from standing.

If he doesn't, then the likelihood of your feeling being accurate gets even bigger.

Because a lot of the coverage woes last year can be put at the feet of the putrid pass rush. When it comes to the corners, I'd say almost all of them.

The one exception for me is the middle routes. There were far too many plays over the middle where the opposing team caught the ball and there was no Packer on the TV screen. If there is no improvement on those plays, we could have Reggie White and Deacon Jones and Willie Davis up front, and the Packer defense would still never get off the field.

Zero, as you said, I think dropping to 260 and hopefully gaining even more speed, quickness and flexibility would be great. At least it should be worth a try. If he has some success at OLB he'll like th position...eveyone likes doing what they are good at. As mentioned, Perry has more talent for the position than Kampmann and I loved Kamp. Hated to see him go but glad he got a good contract, especially since he's been hurt. Perry and the coaches certainly have their work cut out for him to become an outstanding OLB...but I believe the talent is there. This year what we really need is for him to rush the passer well.
