I value a lot of opinions on this board, but was sad to see some disappointed with this pick. 😞 Everyone is entitled to their own opinion though and I still do enjoy reading what most think whether its good or bad.

I personally love the pick and was shocked he fell to #28. When the Patriots were trading up, I thought it was for Nick Perry so that right there says where I think he should have been drafted. Reasons I like this pick:

1. His size. He shouldn't be able to be pushed around being 6'3" 271 pounds. Maybe he shaves a few pounds off (knowing that he will be an OLB) since he packed on 10-15 pounds thinking he would be a DE. Still, being a bigger body will allow him to stuff the run off the edge better than what we have been able to do.

2. He is fast for his size and has a quick, immediate burst. He will have great pass rushing abilities off the edge, which is what the Packers are in dire need of. Possibly adding another 5 technique guy (Worthy or Reyes?) will make the pick of Perry even better in the pass rush.

3. He is athletic. I see a lot of concerns about his coverage abilities and while it should be a concern, I don't think he will have very much coverage responsibilities in his first season. If he does, his athleticism should be able to help.

4. He fits Dom Capers defense. He is a pure tweener and has the ability to play both DE and OLB in a 3-4 (imo). If he stays at 270, then he can have his hand in the dirt sometimes in some funky Capers formation. Capers will utilize this kid to his fullest ability.

5. The players and coaching staff he is surrounded by. Matthews is going to take this kid and mold him. They already have a past and stayed in contact because of their ties at USC. Kevin Greene is probably still dancing at home to this pick because there is so much potential in this kid.

6. He is a Midwestern kid from Detroit. You really can't get any worse than Detroit (excluding Minnesota as an entire state). 😂 Green Bay won't be as much of a shock to him as it would be a player born and raised on the west coast or down south.

Perry doesn't display optimal upper-body strength from play to play.
Stronger blockers will be able to deal with him pretty consistently as a result.
Played inside in a few three-man fronts, and that lack of pure strength shows up and
more practiced NFL tackles will be able to walk him back and to the side.

The Green Bay Packers’ first-round selection (28th overall)

Position: Defensive end

School: University of Southern California

Height, weight: 6-foot-23/4, 271 pounds

Highlights: Considered a potential candidate to play outside linebacker in the NFL, most talent evaluators have favorably compared Perry to Chicago Bears standout Richard Dent. After he posted a 4.58-second 40-yard dash at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine, teams recognized that he might have the most explosive speed for any down lineman that entered the draft. … Perry is expected to rival former USC product and Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews with his outstanding burst, take-off speed, long arms and superb talent. … His ability to disrupt the pocket or track down ball carriers in the backfield allowed him to deliver 21½ sacks and 29½ tackles for loss. … Why some scouts have also eyed him as a linebacker prospect is his ability to drop back in pass coverage as he plays with the proper pad level, along with textbook-like knee bend. … Perry remained at strong-side defensive end for the 2011 campaign, and the All-American and All-Pac 12 Conference selection was a finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award, given to the nation’s top defensive end. … The Trojans’ defensive lineman of the year started all 12 games, ranked fifth on the team in tackles (54) and led the league with 9½ sacks. … He also had 13 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and one recovery.

Strengths: Looks chiseled from granite and is a physical specimen (bench-pressed 225 pounds 35 times at the Combine). Explosive athlete – boasts a 38½-inch vertical leap and broad jump of 10 feet, 4 inches. Features a long, sudden first step and explosive up field burst (see Stanford, Oct. 29, 2011). Flexible to dip, bend and shave the corner. Very quick-handed. Terrific balance and body control. Recorded 10-yard split times (1.51 seconds) faster than several cornerbacks at the Combine.

Weaknesses: Average length. Plays short-armed and does not leverage the edge. Inconsistent eyes and instincts defending the run. Does not feel blocking pressure. Straight-line mover. Average lateral agility, confirmed in poor 20-yard short-shuttle times (4.66 seconds). Motor too often runs hot and cold.

Noteworthy: A native of Detroit, Perry was a two-sport athlete who transferred from McKenzie High School to Martin Luther King High School when the school closed after his junior year. He competed at tight end, linebacker and defensive end during his senior season at King. After recording 147 tackles and a state-record 36 sacks in 2007, Perry was named All-American from USA Today, Parade, Super Prep, EA Sports and Scout.com. … On the other side of the ball, he had 14 catches for 310 yards and eight touchdowns as King went 14-0 and won the state title. … Perry redshirted his freshman year at USC before entering the NFL Draft as a junior. … Perry started 22 of 37 games for the Trojans during his career, recording 103 tackles (62 solo) with 21½ sacks and 29½ tackles for loss. … The junior became the first Trojan to be the conference’s outright leader in sacks in a season since those statistics were officially recognized in 1984.

Strengths and weaknesses according to Pro Football Weekly
Quotable

“I think I have the raw set skills and the mind to do it. I think I have a lot to bring to the table. There’s a lot of potential that needs to be taken out of me. I’m going to Green Bay for the great tradition that’s going to help me improve my game and make me become a better player for years to come.”

-- Nick Perry, Packers first-round draft pick

“We think he certainly has the size and athletic ability that we look for at the position. He tested extremely well at the combine and I think he’s an explosive player. He had a 38-1/2 inch vertical jump and for a guy that size, he obviously has the explosion you look for. He had good production at a high level of competition at USC. It’ll be a little bit of a transition – he’s played with his hand down more than he has standing up – but that’s not uncommon for us in this defense. One of the qualities we look for is guys ability to rush the passer and we think he’s a guy that has the speed to come off the corner.”

-- Dom Capers, Packers defensive coordinator

I like this pick. I've like Perry since the early mocks. His speed for his size is exceptional and one word that dept cropping up that I like is "explosive". Negatives that one saw often were "a little stiff" and "lost in space", maybe a little weight loss and/or flex training could help; it might make him even faster. The coaches job is to teach him so he isn't lost. He's young and should have a good upside, he will get good coaching.

Edit: What makes me like this pick even more is that Ted Thompson made it over some pretty good talent that remained. I trust TT.

Among the (many) things the Packers defense was (really) bad at last year was covering TEs.

Does the OLB not bear some of the responsibility for ensuring that improves?

Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : NFL thought it would get more attention week preceding Super Bowl.
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Yes, the Pro Bowl. It was played Sunday before Super Bowl from 2010-2022

TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : Replays always never seem to show the holdings
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : Great throw by Hurts
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Where Carter falls prey to bad off the field influences (to be clear, not saying he'd clip someone though)
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Had Carter not gone to Philly were they already had a lot of old college friends, he ends up in a similar spot to Aaron Hernandez
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : I think some of his coaches told scouts to stay away
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : the street racing incident+conditioning and motivation problems
beast (10-Feb) : Then Carter was street racing, where the other car crashed and people died... and other teams were scared to pick Carter for some reason
beast (10-Feb) : I think the Saints traded up, giving their next year 1st to the Eagles, and then they sucked and Eagles got the 10th overall pick
packerfanoutwest (10-Feb) : wtf Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : Getting Carter and Nolan Smith in the first round in 2023 was pretty darn good
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : for some reason i'm thinking of a draft where the Eagles where in the mid 20s and a top player fell all the way to them
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : I think so. I would need to look it up. Think it may have been Carolina's pick.
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : i'm not sure who i'm thinking of now
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : oh fuck me i messed that up
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Jordan Davis was 13th overall
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Carter was 9th overall
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles had 15th and 10th selections, moved to 13 and 9 to get Davis and Carter back to back
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
packerfanoutwest (10-Feb) : another crap halftime show
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : I think it is over, but then I think of Atlanta and want Philly to go in with the same intensity in the second half
