CHFF has an article about how to rank the strength of schedule for the NFL.

They are doing it by the average defensive passer rating of the opponents on the schedule.

I resorted the chart to show the toughest schedule on top. They had it inverted.


I added a couple of collumns to it. I put in the Offensive passer rating to compare the differential between how good a teams offense is compared to their competition. Then I subtracted the opponents D rating from the teams O rating.

A lower defensive passer rating means their opponents held their opponents to a lower rating. So a lower number is a stronger schedule.

I went and sorted it by the differential between the strength of schedule and the offensive passer rating.



What it shows is that with the 5th toughest schedule, the Packers had the highest differential.

However, I did use their data from the beginning of the year. So the SOS is last years numbers. I didn't use this years numbers. It will take me a while to assemble that. I would have to go through every weeks rankings and add all 32 teams up. So at this point, it is merely interesting.

He was just saying that the NFCN having 2 of the top 3 Ds made it tougher in the Division.

Since rest of the NFCN has to play both of us which accounts for 1/4 of their total schedule, I think it is valid. But I don't think it is accurate because he used last years strength VS this years schedule.

I would use this years strength VS this years schedule to make a more accurate comparison.
