Whenever people say "dont worry" about the defense, I can't help thinking back to the days of Lynn Dickey.
The offense could score at will. And for the team to win, they had to.
And they didn't sniff a Super Bowl.
I'm not saying our defense is as bad as those defenses were. Their performance last year tells me they can be cut a bit of slack, especially early in the season after a lockout.
But I am worried.
I do believe there are some things that are going to have to improve, and improve substantially, before the season is out. Or what may be the greatest offensive team in history is going to be watching the Super Bowl on TV this year:
1. Too many big plays are being given up.
2. Too many easy 8-20 yard passes over the middle are being completed. And I'm not going to blame Peprah for all of this. Our LBs also need to do better, and so do Burnett and our nickel/dime backs. So does Sir Chuck.
3. Too few sacks are being made. Too little pressure on the QB. Wynn has had moments, but Jenkins' contributions haven't come close to being replaced yet.
4. Too many can't-get-off-the-field long drives are being put together by opposing teams.
Season is still young, but things need fixing or the wins won't keep coming. No matter how many records Aaron the First and the royal Princes Donald, Greg, James, Randall, Jordy, and Jermichael put together.
IMO.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
