These are the type of stories I prefer to read.

A Marine who ran through enemy fire to recover wounded fellow American and Afghan troops during a firefight in Afghanistan received the Medal of Honor Thursday from President Barack Obama.

"You did your duty above and beyond and you kept the faith," Obama told Dakota Meyer, who became the first living Marine to be recognized with the nation's highest military honor for actions in Afghanistan or Iraq.

"The award honors the men who gave their lives that day, and the men who were in that fight," Meyer said, according to a Marine newsletter. "I didn't do anything more than any other Marine would. I was put in an extraordinary circumstance, and I just did my job."

Meyer's actions saved the lives of 13 U.S. Marines and soldiers, and 23 Afghan soldiers, according to the Medal of Honor account on the Marine website. He also is credited with killing at least eight Taliban insurgents during the September 2009 incident in Kunar province.

Meyer, who serves in the Inactive Ready Reserve of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve as a sergeant in his home state of Kentucky, said in November that he didn't want to discuss details of the incident because it's still difficult to think about.

Four Marine advisers died in the firefight.

"I was a failure," Meyer told CNN last fall. "My guys died. That was my whole team."

Neither Obama nor the Marines saw it that way. A defense official with knowledge of the award process last fall said that just before he retired, former U.S. Marine Commandant Gen. James Conway recommended Meyer for the nation's highest award for bravery.

"Sgt. Meyer embodies all that is good about our nation's Corps of Marines," Marine Commandant Gen. James F. Amos said last month. "He is a living example of the brave young men and women whose service, fidelity and sacrifice make us so proud."

On Wednesday, Obama and Meyer had a beer together on the patio outside the Oval Office. According to a series of tweets by White House spokesman Jay Carney, when a member of Obama's staff called Meyer over the weekend to prepare, "Meyer made a special request ... Meyer asked the staffer if he could have a beer with the president."

Meyer is only the second Marine to earn the Medal of Honor from the current wars. In April 2004, Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham was leading a patrol in an Iraqi town near the Syrian border when a person in a vehicle dropped a grenade. Dunham hurled himself on top it, using his helmet to try to blunt the force of the blast. He died eight days later and received the honor posthumously.

"Meyer made a special request ... Meyer asked the staffer if he could have a beer with the president."...Now, that's a Marine in the finest tradition of the Corps...

I like how the lad rolls.

shouldn't marines have better taste in drinking partners? ๐Ÿ™‚

Now, what he shoulda asked for is "a blonde, a brunette, and a redhead".

Just my asshole opinion, of course.

Brett Favreian like, if you spend enough time amongst those that serve this country, you get the great gift of being witness to some awesome displays of heroism...

I have seen it from members of every branch of our services, and several times from the REMFS I so often disparage (Kids... remf= rear echelon mother-fucker)

Navy Corpsmen-- Those f#gs (possessors of not-considered "normal" levels of effeminate qualities PC- ME ๐Ÿ™‚ ) got us all beat. 3/4 of them in combat are at least as deserving as this kid that got that medal... bet he'd agree. I could go on, Sailors rushing into a burning and exploding magazine well, Soldiers standing tall with no fire support, those incredibly AWESOME Air Force kids that go get our pilots (ruff-puffs stealing Marine jobs, but I digress ๐Ÿ™‚ )

I AM most impressed by the kids in the other services that came through when they DIDN'T THINK THEY WERE SIGNING UP FOR THIS KIND OF SHIT

I give guys like Non a little shit, because guys like me -- "ilk" ? (we are called "line" Marines, amongst the cognoscenti (and his brother, btw- I believe, though while at Parris Island possibly out of of the "FMF" [Fleet Marine Force}) are NOT CONFUSED. We are in the KILLING BUSINESS, we know it, and guys in that business get killed, often. Pointy end of the stick, bring us beans, bullets and bandaids (or their modern day equivalent...This is what ALL THE REST DO...) There is no braggadoccio in that statement, no macho b.s., no war story-- It is what we are told from day one that we do. There will be heroism noted, in the aftermath. At the time, mostly everyone is trying to keep one another alive.

The ones that don't see it coming are in fact often the most impressive. Honestly.

beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 ๐Ÿ˜”

dfosterf (7-Aug) : to herd cats or goldfish without a bowl. They reminded me of the annual assembly of our fantasy league

Zero2Cool (6-Aug) : I thought that was the Lions OL
Mucky Tundra (6-Aug) : Travis Glover placed on IR; seasons over for him
Zero2Cool (6-Aug) : found bad sql in database, maybe site faster now?
dfosterf (5-Aug) : I'm going to call that a good move.
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Packers sign CB Corey Ballentine
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : I'm not sure how to kill the draft order just yet so it's not so confusing.
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : *to be able
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Keep in mind, we do a draft reorder once all members locked in
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : You can have my 12th Rd for your 2nd round
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Hey i didn't know we could trade picks in fantasy
Mucky Tundra (3-Aug) : Update: Rock has tried a cheese curd, promises it's not his last
