This week is for guys like Tori Gurley and Chastin West; Ryan Taylor and D.J. Williams; Jamari Lattimore and Vic So’oto.
With no starting spots left unclaimed, the final week of the Green Bay Packers’ preseason is more about the middle and bottom of the roster than anything quarterback Aaron Rodgers or the rest of the starters might do.
The Packers on Sunday cut two veterans, receiver Brett Swain and tight end Spencer Havner, plus released undrafted rookie tackle Theo Sherman, possibly opening a roster spot or two for a newcomer like Gurley or West, who are battling for the sixth receiver spot – if there is one. It’s the same story at tight end, where the Packers seemingly have five NFL-caliber players, including rookies Taylor and Williams, and may end up keeping them all; and at outside linebacker, where both Lattimore and So’oto had sacks in Friday’s preseason game at Indianapolis, and appear to have moved themselves into consideration for a roster spot, especially with starter Frank Zombo sidelined indefinitely with a broken scapula.
With two more training camp practices and one final preseason game on Thursday against Kansas City, this week is more about the newcomers than the veterans, who won’t play much – if at all – against the Chiefs.
“That’s the priority,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said after Sunday’s practice. “We have to pick the right 53. My message to the team today is the focus is on personnel evaluation, make sure we’re picking the right players, giving enough opportunities to get the information to make those decisions.”
If there’s tension in the Packers’ auxiliary locker room, known as the Green Mile, where most late-round draft picks and undrafted rookies are housed during camp, it wasn’t evident on Sunday. Just about everyone in there who’s on the roster bubble was coming off either a strong performance against the Colts or a good practice on Sunday.
