Technique has to do with where the player lines up. A 0-technique, for instance, is lined up nose to nose with the center of the opposing team. You just move out from there, the higher the number goes. 1-technique mans the A-gap, 2-technique lines up against the guard, 3-technique lines up at the outside shoulder of the guard (B-gap) etc.

1 or 2 gap generally refers to how many gaps the D-lineman is supposed to be playing. Between the center and guards you have the A gaps, between the guards and tackles the B gaps and, potentially, between the tackle and TE the C gaps.

For instance, a NT in a 3-4 is often lined up at the 0-technique, playing 2 gap (both A gaps). Let's say, a Ryan Pickett or BJ Raji in our 3-4.

In our 4-3, we had Pickett playing 1-technique, (with, which I asume) a 1 gap assignment and Corey Williams at 3-technique, assigned to a B-gap.

I'm not sure if it's always that rigid, but that's by my understanding. Hope it actually clears something up, because that text got a little more cluttered than I though. :p

A, B , C are the Gaps...

0,1,2,3,4,5 are the techniques..

Dependent on the scheme or call.. the responsibility and alignment may change or the players responsibility may change while occupying the same alignment.

One Gap.. your responsibility in to occupy or penetrate said single gap.. 3 technique playing one gap you be responsible for the B gap your side. You would more than likely shade yourself to that gap..

Two Gap.. if you were playing a two gap.. you would more than likely face up the guard and control the A & B gap your side. in the same alignment above..

*edit... Rock was quicker on the draw.. I was trying to use graphics to assist Zero. [grin1]

I guess this is my problem. There are 6 gaps. You have 3 or 4 men on the line. Nearly everyone should have to cover 2 gaps. Especially when there are 3 down linemen. At least in my mind. If you are lined up in 1 technique and responsible for the right side A gap, and the guy lined up next to you (your left) is covering the other A gap and the left B gap, it would just seem to make sense to try and shed the Center and go make the darn tackle if you can. Even if it is not your gap. In my mind that makes you a 2 gap player. And taking it a step farther, a 3 gap player because who are going to go the the right side B gap which is next to you as well and make the play. You aren't going to look around to see if the guy who has been assigned that gap is there or not.

dfosterf (25-Jun) : of the folks that run this team. I do not recall Mark Murphy being subject to our vote.
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Ed Policy yay or nay is on the pre-approved ballot that we always approve because we are uninformed and lazy, along with all the rest
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Weird question. Very esoteric. For stockholders. Also lengthy. Sorry. Offseason.
Zero2Cool (25-Jun) : Maybe wicked wind chill made it worse?
Mucky Tundra (25-Jun) : And then he signs with Cleveland in the offseason
