Where's A Good Destination For Matt Flynn?

I don't expect GB to trade Matt. If they do, what do you think they can get for him? I think a potential starting QB should be no less than a 3rd round pick.

It's possible that QB Matt Flynn remains with the Green Bay Packers in 2011, but there are some reasons for them to trade him now. His value may never be higher, he might not be under their control past the 2011 season, and it's unlikely the team will pay him like a starter to remain the backup.

I'd like to see him him succeed with whatever non-NFC North team he winds up with. Some teams still need a quarterback after the draft, and they'll have to address the position in 2011. The draft class of 2012 should be a good one, led by Stanford's Andrew Luck, but no team's management can afford to punt the 2011 season and expect to keep their job long-term.

One such team is the Cardinals. After a Kurt Warner led Super Bowl run, his retirement was part of the reason why they were in shambles last season. They made a great selection with CB Patrick Peterson in the first round, but they still need a quarterback to avoid a lost season. Revenge of the Birds doesn't think a trade is likely, but Flynn has been rumored to the Cardinals. Assuming a trade can be made, what would be in store for him in Arizona?

On the surface, it seems like a great fit. He'd play six games against the NFC West, which features three bad pass defenses. They were all ranked poorly by Football Outsiders, with the Rams the highest at No. 21 overall. Ken Weisenhunt has been their head coach since 2007, so the offensive system is well established. The pass protection isn't great, ranked No. 21 overall by Pro Football Focus, and they didn't draft a single lineman. Obviously having Larry Fitzgerald at wide receiver, and playing all their home games indoors, should provide plenty of scoring opportunities.

I haven't taken a close look at any other team that could trade for him, but overall, I can't imagine a better opportunity for him than with the Cardinals.

with no other capable backup QB in my opinion, the question is how much will it take for you to risk your whole season on aaron rodgers' health? If Arod goes down, with Flynn the season is still salvageable, but without flynn, unless Ted Thompson has an ace in the hole, we don't make the playoffs IMO.

I'd say no less than a 2nd if they do decide to deal him, maybe for a 3rd and a vet, but i really don't think a trade like this fits TT

As I said, I don't see it happening either.

If Rodgers goes down, the season is over. Flynn can give the Packers a spot start here and there, but Rodgers is simply too valuable for the Packers to lose. The final six games taught us that.

Flynn is going to stay with the Packers more than likely. I just can't see a team trading for him on short notice. Remember, all signs point toward an early July lockout deal, which means there will be a month before training camp opens around the NFL. That means he has only one month to settle in until training camp. I don't see a team willing to part with a lot because of that. Therefore, Ted Thompson probably hangs onto him.

With that said, this is hypothetical and my guess is probably a west coast offense. Seattle just gave up picks for Charlie Whitehurst, so I'm not sure they go that route. Cleveland also seems like a long shot. Washington could be a dark horse to land him. I don't think John Elway is on the Tim Tebow bandwagon, so maybe Denver. Regardless, I don't think it is going to be one of the obvious choices.

If someone is going to propose that Flynn would get traded, they need to have some sort of credible idea for who might replace him. Unless they saw something in him that they have kept very quiet about, I can't see the Packers going into the season with Graham Harrell as the backup, and Ted Thompson hasn't exactly shown much propensity for bringing in veteran backups. My guess is he stays. On the other hand, it would certainly be a strategic time to get rid of him. I don't think it is likely that he will be interested in staying around as a backup after his contract is over, considering how quarterback starved the league is right now and how much money he could command elsewhere.

If anyone could pull a backup QB out of his ass, it's TT. But Porky's right, it would have to be a WCO team. I wouldn't put it past the Queens to make us an offer. If Flynn became a free agent they'd be all over him, that's certain.

Well the market is definitely down now that a bunch of teams picked up QBs high in the draft. Matt Flynn is still mostly unproven, but he has shown that he can play in this league, which is more than you can say about a rookie QB. For instance, I'm sure Minnesota would have rather given up a 2nd round pick for Flynn than a first round pick for Ponder.

Possible teams could include:
Arizona
Washington
Miami
Oakland
Buffalo

Teams that could quickly call if their current QB isn't playing well in camp:
Seattle
Cleveland

For me, you have to look at the net value in any trade. If we trade him for a second round pick and end up using a third round pick on a back up QB next year, the net gain is only 1 round.

I'm not sure season long insurance at the most important position in football is worth that price. It probably depends on Ted Thompson and MM's confidence in Graham Harrell.

Does Detroit run a WCO? A QB could go down in training camp.

If they can get a good deal on Flynn from some desperate team then go for it. Flynn isn't that good that he is absolutely irreplaceable. He looked ok last year but he made some bad mistakes as well and lost both games he was in. If Rodgers is lost for an extended period of time it probably doesn't matter who the back up is it's game over. If it's just a couple games then the defense and offensive weapons are probably going to be good enough that we can survive whether the back up is Flynn, Harrell, or Random Rookie FA guy.
