Ted Thompson just signed an extension, so hell be sticking around for at least a few more years. But at age 58, Green Bays Super Bowl-winning general manager and football lifer will more than likely walk away from the game once his contract expires following the 2015 season (if not sooner). With little actual news to write about due to the lockout, I decided to look into my crystal ball and take a shot at predicting who could be the next GM of the Packers. Here are some of the top candidates:

JOHN SCHNEIDER - Seattles current general manager would be the clear frontrunner for the job, but only if Mike McCarthy is still the head coach. The two have been close friends for many years and McCarthys voice would be impossible for team president Mark Murphy to ignore. Why would Schneider make what would appear to be a lateral move? Because hes from Wisconsin and hed have far more power with the Packers than he has under Pete Carroll in Seattle. The 39-year-old Schneider has long been considered one of the up-and-coming talent evaluators in the league and the idea of hiring a young GM would probably be very appealing to Murphy. Both Thompson and Ron Wold were already in their 50s when they took over in Green Bay.

JOHN DORSEY - The teams current director of college scouting would probably be the favorite for the job if McCarthy leaves before Thompson. The 50-year-old turned down a number of chances to interview for GM positions around the league because he didnt want to leave Green Bay (he regretted going to Seattle with Mike Holmgren in 1999 and returned after only 16 months). His loyalty to the organization has been appreciated through the years as has been his keen eye for talent. Just remember, every time a member of the media praises Thompson for his recent drafts, that person is also praising Dorsey.

REGGIE MCKENZIE - The teams current director of football operations interviewed for GM positions with two other teams (Atlanta and Tennessee) in recent years, but he failed to get either job. The 47-year-old has been in the Packers front office since 1994 starting off as a pro personnel assistant. For whatever reason, McKenzie has never garnered the same level of league-wide respect that has been afforded to Schneider and Dorsey. Nevertheless, hes highly regarded by both Wolf and Thompson and that, along with at least two Lombardi Trophies on his rsum, should make him a hot candidate in the next few years. In fact, Id be surprised if hes still in Green Bay when Thompson retires.

SCOT MCCLOUGHAN - San Franciscos former GM and Seattless current senior personnel executive worked in Green Bays front office for six years in the 90s and has remained close to Thompson ever since. The 43-year-old parted ways with the 49ers last spring after three consecutive non-winning seasons, but many around the league are willing to give him a pass due to the dysfunction surrounding that once proud franchise. Plus, he did draft quite a few good players during his time in SF. McCloughan had a chance to return to the Packers a year ago, but he chose to stay on the West Coast in order to be closer to his family.

SHAUN HEROCK The teams current assistant director of college scouting would be a candidate if none of the aforementioned men were available. The 40-year-old started with the Packers as a scout in 1994 before being named to his current position in 2001. Herocks father Ken was Atlantas director of player personnel in the 90s and remains one of Wolfs closest friends. Shaun is considered to be a hard worker with a good eye for talent. Some of the best players drafted in recent years have come from the part of the country where he still scouts.

ELIOT WOLF If the name sounds familiar, it should. The 28-year-old Eliot is Rons son and hes been with the organization since 2004. The younger Wolf is probably about five years away from being seriously considered for GM jobs around the league which is about the time the Packers might be looking to hire. Wolf may have gotten his foot in the door due to his famous dad, but his work has now impressed Mike Sherman, Thompson and McCarthy.

I know it's not much to base off of, but reading the article alone, I'd pick Dorsey.

There is no use looking for a GM 3-4 years down the road.
1. The potential candidate could be tied up with another team.
2. Uncle teddy could decide to go another 3-4 years after his current contract expires.
3. The Mayan calender COULD be right.

Mucky Tundra (30-Jan) : Now that's a thought, maybe they're looking at the college ranks? Maybe not head coaches but DC/assistant DCs with league experience?
beast (30-Jan) : College Coaches wouldn't want that publicly, as it would hurt recruiting and they might not get the job.
beast (30-Jan) : I thought they were supposed to publicly announce them, at least the NFL ones. Hafley was from college, so I believe different rules.
Mucky Tundra (30-Jan) : Who knows who they're interviewing? I mean, nobody knew about Hafley and then out of nowhere he was hired
beast (30-Jan) : I wonder what's taking so long with hiring a DL coach, 2 of the 3 known to interview have already been hired elsewhere.
Zero2Cool (27-Jan) : Packers coach Matt LaFleur hires Luke Getsy as senior assistant, extends Rich Bisaccia's deal
Zero2Cool (27-Jan) : Chiefs again huh? I guess another Super Bowl I'll be finding something else to do.

Mucky Tundra (27-Jan) : happy birthday dhazer
TheKanataThrilla (26-Jan) : Exactly buck...Washington came up with the ball. It is just a shitty coincidence one week later
buckeyepackfan (26-Jan) : I forgot, they corrected the call a week later. Lol btw HAPPY BIRTHDAY dhazer!
buckeyepackfan (26-Jan) : That brings up the question, why wasn't Nixon down by contact? I think that was the point Kanata was making.
buckeyepackfan (26-Jan) : Turnovers rule, win the turnover battle, win the game.
packerfanoutwest (26-Jan) : well, he was
TheKanataThrilla (26-Jan) : Eagles down by contact on the fumble....fuck you NFL
Mucky Tundra (26-Jan) : I think this games over
beast (26-Jan) : Eagles sure get a lot of fumbles on kickoffs
Mucky Tundra (26-Jan) : This game looks too big for Washington
packerfanoutwest (26-Jan) : that being said, The Ravens are the Browns
packerfanoutwest (26-Jan) : Browns, Dolphins have longest AFC Championship droughts
packerfanoutwest (26-Jan) : As of today, Cowboys have longest NFC Championship drought,
beast (26-Jan) : Someone pointed out, with Raiders hiring Carroll, the division games between Carroll and Jim Harbaugh are back on (who can whine more games)
beast (26-Jan) : I'm confused, Pete Carroll and Brian Schottenheimer? When Todd Monken, Joe Brady, Kellen Moore, Kliff Kingsbury and Zac Robinson are availab
Zero2Cool (25-Jan) : Any reason I'm catching a shot here about my intelligence?
Martha Careful (25-Jan) : thank you Mucky for sticking up for me
Martha Careful (25-Jan) : some of those people are smarter than you zero. However Pete Carroll is not
Mucky Tundra (24-Jan) : Rude!
beast (24-Jan) : Martha? 😋
Zero2Cool (24-Jan) : Raiders hired someone from the elderly home.
dfosterf (24-Jan) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (24-Jan) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
