I say Bears, Vikings, Cowboys for sure. Niners and Lions not so much.
I am a woman and I love football.

I asked my two friends today who are 49ers fans if they consider the Packers a rival of their team, and they both said not today, but in the nineties, absolutely.

Funny isn't it? They let go of the Packers domination in the 90's, yet Packers fans (myself included) still dislike the Cowboys for the 90's and eliminating the Packers so many times, lol. I think also I'm not in favor of the Cowboys being called America's Team. I'd rather America's Team have more class or no team be labeled as such.

Is there any team that has eliminated us from the Playoffs more than the Cows?

I don't know if I agree with that. You used Dallas as an example and I'll stick with them.

Their rivals are Eagles, Giants, and Redskins. That will always be the case, especially with Washington.

However, during the 90s, Dallas and San Francisco was as heated as a rivalry as you can get. I dont think you can diminish that rivalry because it is no longer such. At that time, Dallas wanted to beat the 49ers more than they wanted to beat the Redskins. Today, both teams are struggling, so the rivalry is dead.

Same thing applies with Raiders and Steelers. That's not really a rivalry anymore. The Steelers rival is Baltimore, but at one time, there was no greater rivalry in football than Raiders vs. Steelers.

In away, rivals do come and go. Situations matter.

I thought about what you are saying before I posted my reply. I guess there can be more than one definition of a rivalry.

One, is a more general term. It can be quite intense and passionate for a while but then dies out. The Dallas SF rivalry falls into this class. But if it dies out it is not really great rivalry.

I like to think of rivalry in a more narrow scope that stands the test of time. It doesn't matter what the teams records are they still play harder against that opponent than the others. They mark the calender and look forward to that game more than the others.

Great rivalries require the teams to play each other on a regular basis. For the most part there are very few NFC-AFC rivalries because they can only play each other once every 4 years. (Two teams in the same metro area certainly can change that.) Rivalries have other things in common besides the game itself. A competition for the loyalty of the fans. There are Bears fans in Southern Wisconsin. Packer fans in Minnesota. Cubs and Cardinal fans interspersed throughout Illinois.

Yes, and '82 as well. That was a fun football year for me and I'm still pissed off about it.
