So quad core is only good if your software utilizes it?

"Zero2Cool" wrote:

Correct. Most newer apps that do very CPU-intensive tasks do take advantage of multiple cores, I'm guessing that your video editing software will if it's current-gen. I've got a 4 core desktop, I don't think I've ever maxed out all my cores.

My suggestion would be to drop in on the official forum for whatever software you use, check out the FAQ, and if it doesn't answer it there ask if the software takes advantage of multiple cores and if so, how well. If there's no support for multiple cores or it only uses two cores I would absolutely suggest getting a dual core processor with a higher clock speed versus a quad core with a lower clock speed.

For video rendering I've been using Power Director 8. I think it's old. Too cheap to get the more gooder newer version.

Well, it looks like PowerDirector9 has a version that's 64-bit native, as well as pretty good support for multiple cores. PowerDirector 8 is 32-bit native but still has support for multiple cores. But, 64bit vs 32 bit shouldn't matter that much for you. If you're going to be doing a lot of video editing on this lappy a 4 core processor with a lower clock speed per core shouldn't be a problem. I would be wary about getting anything slower than 2Ghz though.

I love buying stuff cheap from tigerdirect.com. I got my 24" 1080p HD Monitor that has speakers, an HDMI input, a headphone jack and a monitor hookup for a little less than $200. I got my awesome speakers for $40. I got a new keyboard for $5 that was retailing for $15 at other sites. It's a great site for cheap computer deals.

Edit, also, just found out we get a discount if we buy through Dell.com using the companies employee purchase plan.

"Zero2Cool" wrote:

Do you get a discount on Dell Outlet computers as well??? If you're considering refurbished computers, the Dell Outlet has refurbished/returned computers with the same warranty/service as their new computers.

Usually, they have an outlet sale in the Feb/Mar time frame to unload returns from Christmas time frame. The Outlet inventory changes constantly, depending on what's been returned, so if you don't see something you like just check back in the next hour/day or so, and there will be more stuff on the site.

Superior hardware for less $$$?
Rock-solid operating systems that don't mask their problems by having a restrictive business model (controlling all the hardware put into apple machines)?

Yes, we do get what we pay for. Sorry, Win 7 > OS X 1.6 (or are they on 10.7 now). Windows XP, while it had its flaws, was "modern" for a hell of a lot longer than any Apple OS. And MS didn't charge you $90 for upgrading to SP2 or SP3, which had more differences from release Windows XP than some of the earlier 10.x OSs.

You like the OS? Great. I like how it feels too. But don't ignore all the pluses of windows just to either be an annoying troll or a blatant fanboy that throws insults like VIKINGS FAN around. Apple's core market isn't computers because the only way they'll ever have a chance to actually put a dent in Windows' share of the market is to give up their hardware monopoly. When they do that, their profit margin goes WAY down, and they need to rely on OS sales for profit. And there's no way in hell that's going to happen anytime soon.
