I'm on the fence on this. On one hand I agree with Wade...I think the Derek Anderson situation is comparable. So what if the cameras caught him with a sarcastic chuckle for 2 seconds of a 1hr30min half, that doesn't tell me that he thinks losing is funny, nor do a couple of James Bottomthooth-looking shots while sporadically shown on camera necessarily vindicate or convict Cutler.

Hearing reports that he was out on the town drinking Saturday night, or that it may have only been a sprain, on the other hand, are quite damning, and he may want to hide in the Yukon for a few years if the reports are indeed true.

What's this about the "sarcastic chuckle"? I never saw such a thing. The criticism of Cutler's sideline demeanor was not based on misleading camera tricks. It was based on how he looked every time they showed him, which was a lot. The only exception was a smile after the first Bears' TD. He looked uninvolved--like he was bored or pouting.

I'm sorry. I would like to think a NFL player, making more money than most of us will even see in a lifetime would "man up".

I think he chickened out, plain and simple. I think he told the doctors what they needed to hear to keep him out of the game. Where were the crutches? Where was the ice? Where was any input to his replacements?

If this were "my" QB I would want him off the team. Even if that meant we started a 3rd stringer or rookie next year. I would want someone who showed me he had as much hunger as I to win...and I'm just a fan.

With the diagnosis of a sprained knee, Cutler will loose this team. His teammates will doubt him. His coaches will doubt him. Any other team he might go to will doubt him. However small that doubt is, there will still be doubt.

Quick summary:
Cutler has torn MCL (already established earlier in this thread).
Lovie Smith said Cutler wanted to go back in.

The ethos of toughness in football can be boiled down to seven words: If you can walk, you can play.

That probably had a lot to do with the negative reaction of many current and former NFL players when Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler did not go back on the field after only a few plays in the second half of the NFC Championship Game on Sunday.

Now, however, reports from the Chicago Sun-Times and team officials indicate those nay-sayers who doubted Cutler's toughness in the Bears' 21-14 loss to the Green Bay Packers were wrong.

It turns out, Cutler could not really walk.

Cutler had a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury to his left knee in Sunday's game, the team said. The Sun-Times called Cutler's injury a "Grade II tear, meaning it will take three to four weeks to heal."

The Bears said Cutler would have been "questionable" had the team made the Super Bowl.

Cutler underwent an MRI on Monday and was at Halas Hall, the Bears' practice facility, the Associated Press reports. He did not make himself available to the media and declined comment on the criticism after the game.

Among the many current and former players who piled on Cutler after the game was legendary former Bears coach and current ESPN analyst Mike Ditka, who said: "I can't speak for Jay Cutler. I can't speak for anybody. Myself, I would have had to have been paralyzed to come out of the game. I don't want to say that word. I would have had to be completely knocked out to come out of that football game."

Bears coach Lovie Smith tried to take some of the heat off Cutler when he told ESPN on Monday that Cutler "wanted to go back in."

Jay Cutler has an inferiority complex because he's afraid of the OTHER Jay Cutler (who was arguably much more famous than the football Jay Cutler just a few years ago).

Something that isn't being mentioned enough is that the one throw Cutler made in the second half was a worm burner because he was unable to plant his feet properly.

the sarcastic chuckle was in reference to Derek Anderson being caught on camera during a monday nighter that led to his post-game press conference tirade. I think way too much was made of that situation, just as a little too much is being made of whether or not Cutler's body language was congruent with what we deem it should have been. I get that he looked indifferent and emotionless on the sideline, but he often does and has developed a reputation for that.

Barry Sanders didn't spike the ball and hoot and hollar after a big play or touchdown, but that alone doesn't mean he cared any less than Terrell Owens about scoring.

I think there is enough reason to say Cutler wimped out in this situation, but I don't think resorting to his body langauge is adequate evidence.

You guys think maybe Lovie's decision was (partly) because he knew "Bad Jay" was coming out? I don't know if I think that; I'm just asking. Let's face it: when Cutler gets frustrated he's inaccurate and reckless - not a good combination, esp against a secondary like ours.
