Kicking teams usually try to hold their lanes, not bunch up.
I'm trying to figure out why a kicking team would form a wedge as the rule Greg put up has been made illegal..

Okay, I just watched it again. I think it was legal. They had two guys together in the middle and one guy on each side of them, but it looked like each of the outside guys were two yards away from the ones in the middle, which is the minimum legal distance. With the camera angle, it initially looked like they were bunched up more, but on closer inspection, I don't think they were. So I will shut up about this now.

The need for the rule on the kicking team is to avoid injury. When you have two wedges going full speed into one another, it increases opportunity for injuries.

And for the receiving team they were disallowed interlocking their arms, also a safety precaution.

I don't remember the specific rules, I just remember hearing it, and perhaps am mis-remembering.
