Would a Lab really have to investigate this?

Would there not be sufficient evidence at the scene if the birds were hitting homes, buildings and cars?

Can't wait for the next PETA headline... lets see if we can help them out a bit. Your suggestions to follow.

Madison lab solves mystery of Arkansas blackbird die-off

By Lee Bergquist of the Journal Sentinel

Jan. 6, 2011 12:18 p.m. |(57) Comments

The mystery of the deaths of thousands of blackbirds in Arkansas this month has been solved.

They died of blunt-force trauma, according to the National Wildlife Health Center in Madison. Samples of the blackbirds - and other blackbirds from a separate mass die-off about the same time in Louisiana - were brought to the little-known laboratory on Madison's west side for necropsies.

"They died of impact force to their bodies," said Scott Wright, chief of disease investigations at the center.

He said the birds clearly showed signs of bruises and hemorrhaging.

About 3,000 blackbirds died on New Year's Eve. Fireworks probably sent them flying from their roost sites.

"It's believed that the noise startled them - they are poor night fliers - and they were in close proximity to neighborhoods, and they flew into homes and cars," Wright said.

A separate incident near Baton Rouge involving about 450 blackbirds is still under investigation by the center, Wright said.

"I think the two events are a coincidence," Wright said.

He said large-scale deaths of birds and other species are not as uncommon as people think.

For blackbirds alone, there have been 16 incidents in which 1,000 or more birds have died in single events over the past five years, he said.

Wow........MAKE FIREWORKS ILLEGAL!!!

From now on, they can only go up to a height of 20 feet, and go "poof".

Fireworks are illegal in a lot of places, but not because of animals. Are they still legal in Wisconsin? I suppose so.

This brings to mind Wallace Stevens...

Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird

Wallace Stevens

I
Among twenty snowy mountains,
The only moving thing
Was the eye of the blackbird.

II
I was of three minds,
Like a tree
In which there are three blackbirds.

III
The blackbird whirled in the autumn winds.
It was a small part of the pantomime.

IV
A man and a woman
Are one.
A man and a woman and a blackbird
Are one.

V
I do not know which to prefer,
The beauty of inflections
Or the beauty of innuendoes,
The blackbird whistling
Or just after.

VI
Icicles filled the long window
With barbaric glass.
The shadow of the blackbird
Crossed it, to and fro.
The mood
Traced in the shadow
An indecipherable cause.

VII
O thin men of Haddam,
Why do you imagine golden birds?
Do you not see how the blackbird
Walks around the feet
Of the women about you?

VIII
I know noble accents
And lucid, inescapable rhythms;
But I know, too,
That the blackbird is involved
In what I know.

IX
When the blackbird flew out of sight,
It marked the edge
Of one of many circles.

X
At the sight of blackbirds
Flying in a green light,
Even the bawds of euphony
Would cry out sharply.

XI
He rode over Connecticut
In a glass coach.
Once, a fear pierced him,
In that he mistook
The shadow of his equipage
For blackbirds.

XII
The river is moving.
The blackbird must be flying.

XIII
It was evening all afternoon.
It was snowing
And it was going to snow.
The blackbird sat
In the cedar-limbs.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Legally you can't or are not suppose to have anything that explodes.. bottle rockets, firecrackers, quarter sticks of dynamite...

However on the reservations you can get a number of different fireworks that brush those lines..

For the record.. half stick or full sticks of TNT work the best for fishing. Quarter sticks don't bring enough to the surface. 😉

How about cherry bombs? those give off a lot of colored smoke which could greatly add to pollution, plus they stink.

I couldn't care less about firworks. Makes it awfully hard to navigate the streets at night and it leaves way too big a mess.

Then again, taking this as a reason to outlaw firework would be even more ridiculous.
