Special teams letting a 300 plus pound lineman returning a kick down to our 5.......how is that the coaches fault?

"Cheesey" wrote:

That is the coach's fault because it is a recurring theme that spans multiple seasons with many new faces in the offense that does not seem to get corrected. It's just not MM's fault, Slocum should be shot out of town in a cannon. A great coach turned our porous defense into one of the top defenses in the league the first two years. Sure, the players made it happen in the end. But someone needed to find what was wrong and make the scheme adjustments to fix it, teach the players what they were missing.

Some of the angles taken on that kick return tells me these guys have no idea how to play special teams. Time for a new face on the sidelines.

I don't understand all the "hate" for Mike McCarthy.
So many times this season it's been the players screwing up, not making plays. How is that the coaches fault?
Special teams letting a 300 plus pound lineman returning a kick down to our 5.......Greg Jennings dropping what probably would have been a TD the week before, and various screw ups like that.....Jones fumbling in the Bears game......how is that the coaches fault? He puts the guys in position to win, and they screw it up with a couple bad plays each loss.
The players need to look in the mirror if they want to find who to blame. And fans need to see and recognize that. That's my take on it, at least.

Couple thoughts: 1. You can't so much fire an entire roster - fans know this, so those that feel there's need for a change usually focus on one guy that can be fired - the coach. 2. Some folks are fans watching a game, being entertained, and then going on with their lives as normal. Other fans tie a lot of self-worth and other crap into things, so that losses are personal injuries. Families get yelled at, days are ruined, all that - for those fans, someone must pay for the fact that their teams don't win every single game, every single year. So no, they can't just let it go - the coach must be fired!

Special teams have sucked. I think it's more the scheme then anything. They need to just go back to basics. Run straight down the field, and stop trying to be "fancy" Like was said, ST's have been horrible for a long time now.
Something needs to change, but i don't think it's Mike McCarthy who should be fired.

I'm not that huge of a fan of Slocum myself but he's had to use A LOT of different players this season. I think people forget that the injuries to our starters forces our backups--who are also our starting special teams players--to play a lot of snaps. The personnel changes because of this. That's why I feel there's been a lot more mistakes. The schemes seems solid for the most part but the players seem to lack discipline at times. That lack of discipline could be due to youth, inexperience and lack of reps caused by the shuffling of players or because Slocum can't get his players to perform. I can only speculate.

EDIT: I also remember watching a game and seeing Nick Collins on the kickoff coverage unit. Not that Collins is immediately to blame on ST--he could be quite good--but as a starter on defense he probably doesn't get a lot of ST reps. Just another thing to think about.

I thought the good news would be Mike McCarthy adding to the
unemployment numbers.

I was too busy pouting to post on threads the week this was started. Not because of the NE loss. Because of the Detroit loss. I did read most of the posts and I did agree with Raji's outlook. I knew GB COULD do it. I just wasn't exactly convinced GB WOULD do it.

Looks like GB DID back into the playoffs after all.

I was worried that things basically came together one week late. I felt pretty good about being able to do something in the playoffs but I wasn't feeling overly confident that we'd get in...
