Hunting rifle found in Tomah students car

By Tribune staff | Posted: Saturday, December 18, 2010 12:00 am |
TOMAH A Tomah High School student faces criminal charges after a police dog discovered an unloaded .22 long rifle in the trunk of his car in schools parking lot, according to police.

Raymond Pegel, 17, of Tomah is expected to be charged with possession of a firearm in a school zone and carrying a concealed weapon when he appears in Monroe County Circuit Court.

The dog detected the gun and other hunting items during a routine search for drugs about 8:45 a.m. Thursday. No ammunition was found and no threat involved, police said.

Pegel has been suspended until the police investigation is over and the
school board makes a final decision as to what the next step should be, Superintendent Cindy Zahrte said. Expulsion must be considered per state statute, Zahrte said.

Zahrte said she isnt sure when the school board will meet, but Pegel is keeping up with school work at home.

We are going to make this as quick as possible, but we arent going to rush it, she said.

Students need to be aware where they keep hunting supplies so they dont inadvertently bring them onto school grounds, Zahrte said.

Carrying a concealed weapon? Doesn't that only apply when it's on one's person? What was he supposed to do, leave it on the back seat in full view? As some of the commenters pointed out, why not charge him for possession of a screwdriver or a tire iron too? Those probably make more practical weapons on school grounds than a .22 calibre long rifle.

Can there really be any doubt that these days it's the authorities who represent a greater threat to our liberty and safety than the criminals?

Well, we have to keep the kiddies safe in case he turns out to be another Dylan or Eric.

/sarcastic look.

Pure B.S.
Back in the "old days", kids kept their hunting gear in their cars so that as soon as school was over, they could head out into the woods.
If the kid was planning on killing people, he wouldn't have had it in his car, he would have stashed it somewhere.
It was unloaded, and i imagine in a gun case. "Overkill" by the "authorities" if you ask me.
Down south, people have their rifles in their pickups in gun racks, not even cased.
The "EVIL GUN" strikes again!!!

Not only was it unloaded, there was no ammunition to be found. I suppose the cops figured he was carrying loose rounds in his pockets for everyone to hear.

Or maybe he was gonna point the gun and go "BANG! you're dead!!!"
