Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 + Season Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8 + Season Week 9 Week 11 Week 12 Cumulative Totals to be posted after Week 14.Week 13 (VS. San Francisco 49ers):A couple drops and the inaccuracy of Troy Smith certainly helped our secondary this week. They better get their act together otherwise our generally good long ball defense may start to get toasted.
My Coverage Player of the Week:Week 1: Tramon Williams
Week 2: Sam Shields
Week 3: Nick Collins
Week 4: Charles Woodson
Week 5: Tramon Williams
Week 6: Nick Collins
Week 7: Nick Collins
Week 8: Charles Woodson
Week 9: Charles Woodson/Tramon Williams
Week 11: Tramon Williams
Week 12: Charlie Peprah
Week 13: Tramon WilliamsTramon Williams once again played an outstanding game once again, allowing just 1 reception on 6 passes his direction. It's obvious that it takes an upper echelon quarterback to complete passes on Tramon. His coverage is tight and if any windows to the receiver are available, it's no bigger than the size of those of a prison cell. Any prisoners in Tramon's ward have been on lockdown the entire season.
Both safeties looked vulnerable at times this game. Collins obviously whiffed badly on the Vernon touchdown, but Peprah allowed two big plays early in the game. The help over the top wasn't rotating quick enough and better throws would made this a much closer game. The DL played a good game getting pressure on Smith, so the wrath of Dom would have come down hard on this tandem. Collins, despite picking off the pass on the last defensive play of the game, needs to improve his play and become a difference maker if this defense is going to overcome the potential season-ending injury to Cullen. The secondary, which remains relatively healthy, can't afford to make mistakes.
Woodson had a quiet game and was planted again by Vernon Davis on a 20 yard reception, which seems to be far too common with dating back to last year's Wildcard game. I see why we went more zone this game to force Troy Smith to make more reads, but I would have liked to see a more frequent M2M match-up with Charles and Vernon. Regardless, we won the game and held Troy to a 64.4 QB Rating, so I guess I can't complain too much, but the opportunities were there.
Shields had his best game, metrically speaking, but I wouldn't call it his best game. His 4 targets without a completion allowed is the second most by a Packer this year (Tramon with 5 and 0 in the 2nd Minny game). He was aided by a drop and other poor passes, but he did play a nice game. He nearly got his hands on a couple passes too and you could tell he really wanted those picks. They'll come in time. He's getting close. I expect a breakout year for him next year, but I guess who doesn't?
Clay's pass deflection came on a pass rush and was technically only "targeted" once. It came on the 3rd and goal play to Crabtree on the right side that led to a field goal.
Our screen defense was effective.
Once again, I was supposed to post Cumulative numbers after Week 13 (the 3/4 point), but since I'm going to be breaking down Detroit's game in the next day or two, I'll just post them along with those numbers. full article.
