The Broncos just lost to the Jets last week so the guy may know a few things about the Jets.

Hey I know that's a reach but I thought I would throw it out there.

I am thinking they are looking for more substitutional pass rushers.. just a guess to keep Jone, Zombo and Matthews fresh.

Ted does not make a great deal of moves. However, when he does, he blows my mind with his wisdom, awareness, expertise and track record of sticking to his convictions and the long term plan for a 5 year dynasty.

Ted is like the best chess player in the world. Every move is calculated, precise, and determined in advance.

Mark this move as a huge contribution to this team.

I agree - we have heard this before but in order for a 3-4 to work properly (where the backers get pressure and sacks) there has to be a solid Dline (especially nose tackle).

Raji cant take all those snaps ... and I think wynn is way too light to be a 3-4 DE. Likes get some big fat strong bodies for our DEs and NTs (well maybe pickett and raji can take turns or something).

still like it that we got some LBers (keep our guys fresh).

Green Bay Matt Wilhelm and Diyral Briggs, a pair of linebackers experienced in the 3-4 defense, were added by the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday to their 53-man roster.

Wilhelm, 6 feet 4 inches and 247 pounds, is an inside linebacker who has played in 82 games, including 22 starts, in an eight-year career for San Diego, Philadelphia and San Francisco.

Briggs, 6-2 and 248, is an outside linebacker who played in five games for the 49ers in 2009-'10 and one game for Denver this season.

The Packers signed Wilhelm as a free agent. They were awarded Briggs on waivers from the Broncos.

Wilhelm replaces inside linebacker Maurice Simpkins, a former Green Bay Blizzard arena league player who was released. He was on the roster for three weeks, playing on special teams in two games.

Briggs replaces outside linebacker Brady Poppinga, who was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury suffered against Miami.

Defensive end Mike Neal was placed on injured reserve with a rotator cuff injury. Presumably, Neal's roster berth will be filled later in the week with either Al Harris or Atari Bigby from the physically unable to perform list.

For now, at least, the Packers have A.J. Hawk, Desmond Bishop, Brandon Chillar and Wilhelm at inside linebacker, and Clay Matthews, Brad Jones, Frank Zombo and Briggs at outside linebacker. Rob Francois can play all four positions.

Wilhelm, the Chargers' fourth-round draft choice in 2003 from Ohio State, started 14 games in 2007 and seven in '08. He received a $2.625 million signing bonus as part of a six-year deal in December 2006.

San Diego cut Wilhelm in July 2009. He spent August 2009 with the Eagles before being cut and then played 11 games for the 49ers later in the season.

The 49ers negotiated an injury settlement with Wilhelm and waived him Sept. 9. A source said Wilhelm rehabilitated a knee injury and was ready to play about two weeks ago.

"If you were looking for an inside backer in a 3-4 he was probably one of the top two or three guys available," said a personnel man for a team using a 3-4 defense. "He's not a descending player. He's close to 30 (29), but he's not one of these aging, veteran types."

Wilhelm ran 40 yards in 4.72 seconds in 2003. He scored 19 on the Wonderlic intelligence test and had an exceptional 39-inch vertical jump.

"He's more of a weak inside backer, where he can flow and pursue to the football, than a strong inside backer," the scout said. "He's got size, he's got instincts and he's a pretty good athlete. Not necessarily a heavy-handed player at the point of attack but he can slip and slide off blocks."

For his career, Wilhelm has 258 tackles, two sacks, six interceptions, no fumbles forced and no fumbles recovered. He added 53 tackles on special teams.

Briggs registered 26 sacks in a 47-game, 27-start career at Bowling Green, then signed as a free agent with the 49ers. He played five snaps on defense and 35 on special teams last year in San Francisco. He has a 40 time of 4.75 and a vertical jump of 31.

"Pretty good athlete and better than average speed," the scout said. "He's more of a speed rusher than a bull rusher off the edge. He will need to win with his speed more than an array of moves."

"He can meet a block and hold the point. I dont think he re-sets the line of scrimmage. Hes experienced in the defense so it should be a pretty seamless transition. I dont think his ceiling is high."

Besides Wilhelm, the Packers on Tuesday also worked out defensive end Nick Reed and linebacker Erik Walden.

The Packers were the only team to claim Briggs. His minimum-salary contract extends through 2011.

Martha Careful (18h) : thank you Mucky for sticking up for me
Martha Careful (18h) : some of those people are smarter than you zero. However Pete Carroll is not
Mucky Tundra (22h) : Rude!
beast (23h) : Martha? 😋
Zero2Cool (24-Jan) : Raiders hired someone from the elderly home.
dfosterf (24-Jan) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (24-Jan) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you
wpr (22-Jan) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (22-Jan) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
