2010 Chargers

I remember someone mentioned that MM is the Norv Turner of the NFC. I don't necessarily agree but I find it hilarious lol.

Well, I said it before and I'll say it again - yards mean nothing. It's all about points.

When a team is #1 in PF and PA, they usually win the SB. See '96 Packers for example.

A lot of yards are garbage yards. For example, SD was losing by something like 17 points. They racked up a lot of yards in that game as they were trying to catch up. Meaningless.

My list of thoughts on the Chargers

1. Rivers puts up huge garbage numbers

2. They have the worst special teams on the league

3. Their defense can't allow that many yards if their opponents have no yardage to pickup after their returner returned it to field goal range already

4. Who cares about yardage. Calculate the points. Look at my post in the Green Bay vs New York thread for more.

The thinking that yards mean nothing and points are so accurate is wrong. Points can be garbage just as much as yards.

When you take the yards at face value, that's foolish, same thing goes with points.

There's no recipe for this, yet we all continue to pretend like we know of one.

Yards I feel are far more misleading than points. As mentioned above, a good special teams will net less yards for offense, but more yards for defense and a poor special teams could net more yards for offense and less for defense. Where do you draw the line?

This is another one of those things that there's so many variables in it, it's not worth going in depth arguing about. It just amazes me how some can be so pro points or so pro yards as if there's some magic to them.

Here's a list of variables

Gave up a 94-yard punt return for a touchdown against Kansas City.

Fumbled at their own 13-yard-line, resulting in a Kansas City touchdown three plays later.

Gave up two kickoff returns for touchdowns in the same half, to the same guy, against Seattle.

Turned the ball over five times against Seattle.

Allowed the Raiders to block two of their punts, both in the first five minutes of the game, both resulting in Oakland scores.

Fumbled at Oakland's 1-yard line.

Fumbled again inside Oakland's red zone.

Fumbled once again in Oakland territory, this one picked up by Oakland and returned for a touchdown.

Had a field-goal attempt blocked against St. Louis. Kicker Nate Kaeding(notes) injured himself on the play.

Turned the ball over against New England when receiver Richard Goodman(notes) caught a pass for a first down, set the ball on the ground and got up without having been touched by a defender.

Turned the ball over again as Jacob Hester(notes) failed to pursue a backwards pass that was not completed.

A potentially game-tying 45-yard field-goal attempt turned into a 50-yard field-goal attempt after a false start, which was then doinked off the upright.

LOL. Not to mention they're almost dead last in turnover ratio. By the way I'm agreeing with you.

We gained what, 200 yards against the Vikings in the 1st quarter.....yet we only had 7 points to show for it.
Yards are nice, but the ONLY thing that matters is points scored.

The only thing that matters is we scored MORE points than the other team. That's what seems to be missing from these little yards/points debates.

I would take a 2 - 0 win every game.

Yards count for nothing without a W at the end of the column.
