The Green Bay Packers entered the season with high hopes of making a Super Bowl run, but they've had to work through major inconsistency throughout their first five games.

Their growing list of injuries may present an even bigger challenge.

Aaron Rodgers' concussion headlines Green Bay's many injury concerns entering Sunday's matchup with the visiting Miami Dolphins, who come out of their bye hoping to avoid a third consecutive loss.

The Packers (3-2) have already played without running back Ryan Grant since he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 1, and they suffered several other losses during a 16-13 overtime defeat at Washington last Sunday.

Linebacker Nick Barnett (wrist) and tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) had surgery this week, and a few of their teammates may join them on the sidelines Sunday.

Rodgers and NFL sacks leader Clay Matthews are the two most important players in a banged-up group that also includes defensive lineman Ryan Pickett, tight end Donald Lee and safety Derrick Martin. Cornerback Al Harris and safety Atari Bigby, meanwhile, have yet to play this season.

Matthews' status is uncertain with a strained left hamstring, while Rodgers will need to pass a series of neurological tests after suffering a minor concussion late in the game against the Redskins -- leaving a strong chance that backup Matt Flynn will make his first NFL start.

"It's one of them seasons, man, where everybody is getting hit, and we just got to bounce back," Finley said. "Hopefully at the end of the season it could be a story, you know, about us still being in the Super Bowl. I still got faith in this team."

Green Bay has also encountered problems on the field, including eight turnovers in the last three weeks during two losses and a shaky home victory over Detroit on Oct. 3.

The Packers committed 18 penalties in a 20-17 loss at NFC North-leading Chicago on Sept. 27 and nine more last Sunday -- one reason they lost despite an improved running game that racked up 157 yards on 17 carries.

"I think we all know yards don't mean anything," coach Mike McCarthy said. "It's about points."

Green Bay ranked third in the NFL in scoring last season but has been held under 20 points in both defeats, something that happened once in all of 2009.

It's unclear if the offense could be effective with Flynn at the helm. In limited NFL action, the third-year player is 9 of 17 for 64 yards and an interception.

"During the regular season with the opponent squad, he's going against our defense (in practice)," quarterbacks coach Tom Clements said. "Now, obviously, playing in the regular season is different and things go a little faster. But we're confident that Matt will do a good job if needed."

Miami's defense was stingy the first two weeks, allowing a total of 20 points in victories at Buffalo and Minnesota, but then AFC East contenders New York and New England combined for 72 points in their wins in south Florida.
NFL RedZone

Watching football on Sundays will be a whole new experience with NFL Network's new channel, NFL RedZone. Find out why.

The Patriots did much of their damage on defense and special teams in a 41-14 victory Oct. 4, becoming the first team in NFL history to get a touchdown from an interception return, a blocked field goal return and a kickoff return in the same game.

The Dolphins (2-2) promptly fired special teams coach John Bonamego and spent their bye week trying to correct the problems.

"I want my core players to play better on special teams," coach Tony Sparano said. "If we need to put some starters out there, then we will."

Quarterback Chad Henne also had plenty to think about during the week off. While Henne has passed for 668 yards and four touchdowns in his last two games, he's also thrown four interceptions in that stretch - matching a career high with three against New England.

Sparano still thinks Henne is making progress, and Henne believes he's capable of leading the Dolphins to the playoffs.

"Definitely. There's no question," Henne said. "I see myself each and every day getting better at things that I wasn't so good at last year."

In addition to reigning NFL defensive player of the year Charles Woodson likely leading coverage of top target Brandon Marshall, Henne will find a stiff challenge playing at Lambeau Field for the first time.

The Packers have won six straight at home dating to last season, and the Dolphins lost their last two visits to Green Bay in 1997 and 2002.

dfosterf (27-Aug) : Mecole Hardman to our practice squad
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Nick Nieman from Texans our 5th linebacker. Special teams signing
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Looks like we signed Clayton Tune as QB3
wpr (27-Aug) : TKT people lose their minds over QB3. Point is almost none of them are ready that's why they are on the PS and other teams don't take them.
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Unfortunately he doesn't seem ready to be an emergency QB.
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : As a Canadian and a follower of Canadian University football. I am rooting for him
dfosterf (27-Aug) : I bet a lot of us will follow the Taylor Elgersma journey with interest. Personally, got a Kurt Warner vibe goin' on. I like him
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Not sure if either will be claimed though.
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Tune or Hooker would make sense
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Clayton Tune cut by the Cards? Don't know if that's the guy, we shall see
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Per Bill Huber, the Packers will not be bringing back Taylor Elgersma or Sean Clifford on the practice squad, so a new third quarterback
Mucky Tundra (27-Aug) : Schefter must have deleted his tweet
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Hopefully Jerry reaches under the seat cushions and ashtrays of his jet and scrapes up the 45 million apr and spares us further nonsense
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Have to admit the PO'd Cowboy fan videos would be fun to watch. Problem with draft picks is half their fanbase barely knows what that is
beast (27-Aug) : I think Cowboys fans are ready to get their pitch forks and burning sticks if Jerry were to trade Micah
dfosterf (27-Aug) : If Jerry traded Micah to GB, here in northern Va. they would have to quick build yet another data center to handle the internet hate traffic
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : its signing and trades that you don't hear about, other then announced
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : If you hear rumors about Packers sign or trade, won't happen. Not how they work
dfosterf (27-Aug) : 19 players in a contract year. Jones called loss to us worst loss in Cowboy history. Forget Parsons trade. Not happenin' Cap'n
packerfanoutwest (27-Aug) : The Packers, meanwhile, are the youngest team in the league for the third consecutive year.
dfosterf (27-Aug) : That it was darkest before the dawn in Bengals and Commanders before they got deals done
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : what is Schefter saying?
dfosterf (27-Aug) : He was getting Dorito infusion therapy
dfosterf (27-Aug) : He's outta shape. Why, just the other day I saw him splayed out on the trainers table
