Patriots fan dies at Gillette Stadium with son at his side

Posted by Michael David Smith on September 18, 2010 3:21 PM ET

The saddest story of Week One of the NFL season happened at Gillette Stadium, where a 40-year-old fan died of a heart attack after a confrontation with a stadium worker over whether his 6-year-old son could step on the field.

The fan, Jeffrey Chartier, was reportedly told by NFL officials before the game that his son, Tedy, could run on the sidelines and take pictures on the field. But witnesses told the Sun Chronicle that a stadium staffer told Chartier that his son couldn't come on the field and was generally "giving him a hard time."

When Chartier's son started crying, Chartier and the stadium worker got into an argument.

"He was saying, 'He's 6 years old. How can you make him cry on opening day when he just had one of the most exciting experiences of his life?'" witness Dwayne Hunter told the Sun Chronicle.

Chartier reportedly collapsed when he got back to his seat and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Firefighters took care of Tedy until his mother arrived.

NECN.com reports that a memorial fund has been established for Chartier's two children.

Maybe he shouldn't have waited till he was 34 to have a child. 😉

Incredibly unfortunate story. I was in my late 20's and seen my mothers lifeless body and it left a helluva impact. I can only imagine being 6 years old and having dad die right next to me. Very traumatic to the say the least.

I don't know if I disagree with disallowing the child to run the sidelines. You can't have 40k kids or how ever many running up and down the field.

I saw one of my siblings (still a tiny baby) lying dead in the bathroom when I was in my early teens. It was many years before I could properly grieve over it. I did my best to suppress it for a long time.

The poor boy will forever remember his Dad died at a football game. That has to impact him. Every time he sees a game, it will remind him of that.
Just so sad.

The Twins let every kid in the stadium that wants to run the bases after each home game. I don't think it would be that detrimental to the field.

Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.

dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
