This is one of the best threads we've ever had on this site. I want to respond to it from the opposite perspective -- the guy who has wept tears into his pillow that he couldn't gain weight

OK, try this. Lose 40 pounds. Then hold a football in your hand. Run with it. Now, allow some guy 40 pounds heavier who runs a 4.6 tackle you as hard as he can.

Fun, isn't it?

More importantly, I've had girls turn me down for being too thin because they liked "meatier" guys.

Most girls who turned me down never told me why. I always hated the one's who said, "I like you as a friend." WTF is that all about -- I wasn't asking them out for sex, after all. (Well, ok, not all of them. Maybe some of those I asked out b4 I turned 30.)

But the most embarassing were the three who just broke out in laughter.

It's a numbers game, my friend. More girls = more chances to find that one.

Also, you don't want to be passive. Passive > "you're such a nice guy. I'm so glad we're friends."

Contrary to popular opinion, you don't have to be an asshole. You just have to know what you want. Yes, that's often mistaken for being an asshole.

You need to be up front. You are interesting in seeing her naked, not being on the phone with her at 3 in the morning because someone else screwed her and left and now she's crying and she needs someone to talk to.

If that EVER happens to you again, here's what you say to whoever was laughing: "Yeah, i may be fat, but your UGLY. I can diet and lose weight, and you'll STILL be ugly".

Just the other day i got laughed at by 2 teenage girls. I know it was because I have such long hair, but it still bothered me. But i like my hair, I like ME, and if they don't like it, the heck with them!
I've also had pretty women come up to me and ask if they can touch my hair, and I've had many smile at me.
So i guess you can't please them all.

Yea I was hugely fat as a kid. Like obese. It bothered me a lot and to this day I still have issues with it. Even though I'm just big and somewhat overweight now I still feel like people are looking at me with disgust. It's something I have not yet learned to shake but I've learned to not care about it, which I guess is the first step.

I know what you mean Dcubez.
And it's VERY hard not to let it get to you. I have learned (over MANY years) that you can't let people get to you.
You know my goofy sense of humor........my ability to make fast come-backs came from having to use my "brain" to fight, as I couldn't win a physical fight. So i can usually knock them down verbally if they "attack" me.
When i sang in the "Ozaukee Idol" contest, i was SO nervous. Being on stage in front of about 400 people, you can't help but wonder "What are they thinking of you?" Even though I have lost weight, i still have that "heavy" attitude, or "feeling". I KNOW I'm ALOT thinner then i was, but my own brain doesn't want to accept it. It comes from years of that "fat" feeling. I'm sure not thin now, but thinner then i was.

The NICE thing is, i know what it feels like. You can choose to use it to be a jerk, or to be compassionate to others.
It's a shame that "looks" are what seems to matter most, and alot of people won't even give you a chance if you don't meet their idea of "beauty".

Wade, forget all this "accept me for what I am" crap.

Just go fix the problem, it's easy to do once you get over all the excuses and mind games.

Good stuff, Wade. Correction, GREAT stuff.

Once upon a time in the (not very distant past) I had a subordinate that was obese. I had a boss that held this against him. He was around 480. That is not the story, though. His weight WAS a story, in the sense that he had endured a lifetime of prejudices, rejections, etc.--- and emerged (at the point in his life where I was privileged to know and work with him) as an incredibly insightful, tolerant and gracious person. Everyone liked and respected him. He was a father of four children...his wife had dumped him...I could go on and on.

Yet he not only endured, he thrived, as he had an inner dignity hewn (I can only speculate) through overcoming those prejudices.

My boss fired him for an extremely minor infraction of a company rule. My boss was never at this particular location, (maybe once a month, cameo appearance) and never saw how well liked and respected he truly was. All he knew was that he was fat. Here comes the hyper-hypocrite part...

The bitch of it?

My boss was a devout Christian. Huge "deacon-whatever" at one of those mega-Baptist churches. He was the regional head of "Promise Keepers." He ran an openly Christian-based retail chain. Company vision: "To please God with the quality of our work." He was also a pilot performing many, many "angel flights" weekly.

After I called him every single name in the book I could think of, I resigned my position---I had JUST been promoted by this man a couple of hours beforehand, with a 30K raise to boot. (This was just after I had got out of the service)

Some fucking Christian. Christian unless you are overweight, I guess. I wish I had taken the time and trouble to go paint that on his twin beech before leaving his employ.

Like I said, I hate a bully, in all forms and guises.

I don't know what happened to my overweight co-worker, but I only hope for the sake of his next employer that he was wise enough to recognize what an incredible gift God had bestowed upon him via some burgers and such.

It made him a nice person. You know, like you.

You got 5 lbs. I got 9 beers left before I start my count-down. (Pre-existing condition kinda thing, lol)

I'm in, buddy!

Good luck, sir. !

I think I should just knock those beers out so as to not complicate things...math-wise...today.

I will explain that it was for medicinal purposes when my wife gets home.
